November 29, 2020

Prelude        Praise and Thanksgiving      G. F. Handel

Welcome and Announcements

Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle

Interlude       Pastorale         J. S. Bach

Ringing the Church Bell

Call to Worship:
Responsive Reading                        Isaiah 40:28-31

Leader: Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth.
People: He will not grow weary, and his understanding no one can fathom.
Leader: He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak.
People: Even young people grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall;
All: But those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

Chorus           Emmanuel, Emmanuel        UMH #204
Emmanuel, Emmanuel,
His name is called Emmanuel.
God with us, revealed in us,
His name is called Emmanuel.

Unison Invocation
Almighty God, who came to us long ago in the birth of Jesus of Nazareth,
“descend to us, we pray, cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today.”
We ask only for grace and strength to live as your faithful, joyful children
as we follow your Son in whose name we pray. Amen.

Hymn          Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus        UMH #196
Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set your people free;
From our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee.
Israel’s strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all sufficient merit raise us to thy glorious throne.

Prayers of the People and The Lord's Prayer (in Unison)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Message       “Things We Did Not Expect”               Isaiah 64:1-9

Hymn            Joy to the World                        UMH 246
Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing, and heaven and nature sing, and heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Postlude       Give Thanks              Henry Smith

– please light a candle

Interlude              Adagio Cantabile from the Pathetique Piano Sonata, Ludwig Beethoven

Ringing the Church Bell

Call to Worship:
Responsive Reading                                Psalm 100

Leader: Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.
People: Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.
Leader: Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.
All: For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

Chorus              O Come, All Ye Faithful                 UMH #234
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
O come, let us adore him,
Christ the Lord.

For he alone is worthy,
For he alone is worthy,
For he alone is worthy,
Christ the Lord.

Unison Invocation
Heavenly Father, send your transforming power into our lives as we come to you in this time of worship. Use these moments to bring wisdom, courage, grace, and strength so that we might faithfully follow your Son in whose name we pray. Amen.

Hymn   "Let All Things Now Living"       TFWS #2008
Let all things now living a song of thanksgiving
to God the Creator triumphantly raise,
who fashioned and made us,
protected and stayed us,
who guides us and leads to the end of our days.

God’s banners fly o’er us; God’s light goes before us,
a pillar of fire shining forth in the night,
till shadows have vanished
and darkness is banished,
as forward we travel from light into light.

Amen.

Message        Danny Crego             Colossians 1:11-20

Hymn            The Summons                     TFWS 2130
Will you come and follow me if I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know and never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
will you let my name be known,
will you let my life be grown in you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see if I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free and never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean, and such as this unseen,
and admit to what I mean in you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true when you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you and never be the same.
In your company I’ll go where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow in you and you in me.

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Postlude   "Come ye Thankful People, Come"  St. George’s Windsor tune arranged by Paul Davis

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle

Interlude
Ringing the Church Bell

Call to Worship: Responsive Reading from Psalm 123
(The Message)
Leader: I look to you, heaven-dwelling God, look to you for help.
People: Like servants, alert to their master’s commands, like a maiden attending her lady, we are watching and waiting, holding our breath, awaiting your word of mercy.
All: Mercy, God, mercy.

Chorus                         This is the Day                 UMH #657
This is the day, this is the day
That the Lord has made, that the Lord has made.
Let us rejoice, let us rejoice
And be glad in it, and be glad in it.

This is the day that the Lord has made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.
This is the day, this is the day that the Lord has made.

Unison Invocation
Lord Jesus, we boldly declare our love for you without shame.
You are the Lord of life, the light in the darkness, the salvation for the world.
Help us make this a day of celebration simply because you are God and have called us to follow you. Amen.

Hymn         This Is My Father’s World             UMH #144
This is my Father’s world,
and to my listening ears all nature sings
and round me rings the music of the spheres.
This is my Father’s world;
I rest me in the thought of rocks and trees,
of skies and seas; his hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father’s world.
O let me ne’er forget that though the wrong
seems oft so strong, God is the ruler yet.
This is my Father’s world;
Why should my heart be sad? The Lord is King;
let the heavens ring! God reigns; let the earth be glad.

Amen.

Message                “I Trust You”                Matthew 25:14-30

Hymn            You Are Salt For the Earth     TFWS 2190

You are salt for the earth O people,
salt for the kingdom of God!
Share the flavor of life, O people;
life in the kingdom of God!
Bring forth the kingdom of mercy,
bring forth the kingdom of peace.
Bring forth the kingdom of justice,
bring forth the city of God.

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Welcome and Announcements

Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle

Interlude

Ringing the Church Bell

Call To Worship
Responsive Reading                                  from Psalm 78 (NIV)

Leader: I will open my mouth in parables. I will utter things hidden from of old.
People: We will not hide them from our children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the Lord, his power, and the wonders he has done.
Leader: So the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.
All: Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget his deeds but would keep his commands.

Chorus                 I Love to Tell the Story        UMH #156
I love to tell the story of unseen things above,
Of Jesus and his glory, of Jesus and his love.
I love to tell the story, because I know ‘tis true;
It satisfies my longings as nothing else can do.

I love to tell the story,
‘twill be my theme in glory,
To tell the old, old story of Jesus and his love.

Unison Invocation
How merciful you are Lord!
You forgive our sins…all our sins.
Teach us the art of confessing our sins.
Keep us from shamelessly pointing out the failures of others.
Help us be more like Jesus in whose name we pray. Amen.

Hymn               Fairest Lord Jesus        UMH #189
Fairest Lord Jesus, ruler of all nature,
O thou of God and man the Son,
Thee will I cherish, thee will I honor,
Thou, my soul’s glory, joy, and crown.

Fair is the sunshine, fairer still the moonlight,
And all the twinkling starry host.
Jesus shines brighter,
Jesus shines purer than all the angels heaven can boast.

Beautiful Savior! Lord of all nations!
Son of God and Son of Man!
Glory and honor, praise, adoration,
now and forever more be Thine!

Amen.

Message                “Here He Comes!”          Matthew 25:1-13

Hymn               While We Are Waiting
While we are waiting, come.
While we are waiting, come.
Jesus, our Lord, Immanuel.
While we are waiting, come.

With power and glory, come.
With power and glory, come.
Jesus, our Lord, Emmanuel.
While we are waiting, come.

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.

Love Your Neighbor Day

Love Your Neighbor Day
Payette United Methodist Church

“‘Teacher, which command in God’s Law is the most important?’ Jesus
said, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and
intelligence. That is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a
second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These
two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs
from them.’”
(Matthew 22:36-40 – The Message)

I hear that something is happening on November 3, 2020. Something about counting ballots?

Since many have already voted let’s try something. How about reducing the tension and friction by finding some ways to show a little kindness and love?

So, let’s try this:
  • Do something for someone in your neighborhood that shows some love
  • Find a way to thank or honor someone who has enriched your life or the life of someone you love
  • Wear your mask
  • Vote

It’s pretty simple. It will really help.

Jesus is right. This is important.

P.S. – That picture shows what Pam has prepared for our neighbors. I’d like to see or hear what you have planned.

All Saints Day

November 1, 2020

Welcome and Announcements
Please have the elements of communion prepared. We will celebrate communion later in the service.

Prelude        For All the Saints         William How and Ralph V. Williams

Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle

CALL TO WORSHIP
        Musical Interlude                     O How He Loves You and Me                        Kurt Kaiser
        Ringing of the church bell

Hymn        “Open Our Eyes Lord”         TFWS #2086
Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus,
To reach out and touch him, and say that we love him.
Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen.
Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus.

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
 I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Unison Invocation
Gracious and holy God,
We ask that this time might correct our thinking and influence our actions.
We come to worship you and only you.
We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ.
Amen.

We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshipped you, whether around campfires at a church camp or in cathedrals, weathered wooden churches filled with memories or crumbling cement basements of church buildings where your name was lifted and adored.

We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise:
  • Manicured hands and hands stained with grease or soil,
  • Strong hands and those gnarled with age
  • Holy hands that have held hymnbooks and Bibles, that have prepared casseroles and desserts for potlucks and funeral dinners,
  • that have been clasped with ours as we prayed together.

We thank you, God, for hardworking saints;

Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, wearing an apron or with dirt under their finger nails. Educators, Farmers, Office managers, Electricians, Business owners, Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Daughters.

They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come.

Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us.
Bless the memories of your saints, God, for they have shown us the way by walking it.

May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love.

The Lord's Prayer (in Unison)
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come.
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us,
and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Message        “You Must be Careful”      Matthew 23:1-12

Hymn                  “Lord of the Dance”         UMH #261
I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth.
At Bethlehem I had my birth.

Refrain
Dance, then, wherever you may be;
I am the Lord of the Dance, said he.
And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be
and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he.

I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance and they would not follow me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;
They came to me and the dance went on.   Refrain

The Communion Service
           Communion Hymn
Our Lord invites to his table all who love him,
Who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.
Let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession and Pardon
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled.
Forgive us, we pray.
Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you.
Forgive us, we pray.
We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers.
Forgive us, we pray.
 We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray.
Amen.

Hear the good news;
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!

Bread and Cup
Please take the bread.
Please take the cup.

Please pray:
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead.
May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Unison Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.

May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.

May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

God be with you ‘til we meet again.
