From Jim’s Cluttered Desk November 3, 2020 Love Your Neighbor Day Payette United Methodist Church “‘Teacher, which command in God’s Law is the most important?’ Jesus said, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your passion and prayer and intelligence. That is the most important, the first on any list. But there is a second to set alongside it: ‘Love others as well as you love yourself.’ These two commands are pegs; everything in God’s Law and the Prophets hangs from them.’” (Matthew 22:36-40 – The Message) I hear that something is happening on November 3, 2020. Something about counting ballots? Since many have already voted let’s try something. How about reducing the tension and friction by finding some ways to show a little kindness and love? So, let’s try this:
It’s pretty simple. It will really help. Jesus is right. This is important. P.S. – That picture shows what Pam has prepared for our neighbors. I’d like to see or hear what you have planned. Payette United Methodist Churches All Saints Day November 1, 2020 Welcome and Announcements Please have the elements of communion prepared. We will celebrate communion later in the service. Prelude For All the Saints William How and Ralph V. Williams Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle CALL TO WORSHIP Musical Interlude O How He Loves You and Me Kurt Kaiser Ringing of the church bell Hymn “Open Our Eyes Lord” TFWS #2086 Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, To reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Unison Invocation Gracious and holy God, We ask that this time might correct our thinking and influence our actions. We come to worship you and only you. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen. All Saints Prayers of the People Arden Walter Steiniker Harold Wayne “Hal” King 1934 – Dec. 28, 2019 March 21, 1950 - July 22, 2019 Darrell Arthur Carr Nov. 14, 1950 – Oct. 13, 2019 Joanne Good Ben Kerfoot George Strange Beverly Perkins We give you thanks, O God, for all the saints who ever worshipped you, whether around campfires at a church camp or in cathedrals, weathered wooden churches filled with memories or crumbling cement basements of church buildings where your name was lifted and adored. We give you thanks, O God, for hands lifted in praise:
We thank you, God, for hardworking saints; Whether hard-hatted or steel-booted, wearing an apron or with dirt under their finger nails. Educators, Farmers, Office managers, Electricians, Business owners, Mothers, Fathers, Brothers, Sisters, Grandparents, Daughters. They left their mark on the earth for you, for us, for our children to come. Thank you, God, for the tremendous sacrifices made by those who have gone before us. Bless the memories of your saints, God, for they have shown us the way by walking it. May we learn how to walk wisely from their examples of faith, dedication, worship, and love. The Lord's Prayer (in Unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Message “You Must be Careful” Matthew 23:1-12 Hymn “Lord of the Dance” UMH #261 I danced in the morning when the world was begun, And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun, And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth. At Bethlehem I had my birth. Refrain Dance, then, wherever you may be; I am the Lord of the Dance, said he. And I’ll lead you all wherever you may be and I’ll lead you all in the dance, said he. I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee, But they would not dance and they would not follow me; I danced for the fishermen, for James and John; They came to me and the dance went on. Refrain The Communion Service Communion Hymn Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, Who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us confess our sin before God and one another. Prayer of Confession and Pardon Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Forgive us, we pray. Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you. Forgive us, we pray. We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers. Forgive us, we pray. We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Bread and Cup Please take the bread. Please take the cup. Please pray: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead. May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Unison Benediction May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you.
