From Jim’s Cluttered Desk
You might have heard that there is an election coming up in the United States on November 3. Yes, with all that is going on we will be voting for a president, senators, federal representatives and all the state and local offices. Tension and exhaustion have taken up residence in our national life. Some folks “just want it to be over.” Others seem to be trying to “pick a fight.” Inspired by this week’s gospel reading (Matthew 22:34-40) and Collister United Methodist Church, I’d like to propose making November 3 “Love Your Neighbor Day.” Our congregations have an outstanding tradition of community outreach. The grocery gift card is the most recent example. What would “Love Your Neighbor Day” look like? First of all, vote. Secondly, take on a “random act of kindness” directed at a family in your neighborhood. Be creative: some flowers left on their porch – a card wishing them a good day – raking leaves – some produce from your garden – a phone call expressing appreciation. The ideas are limitless. Then, find a way to show appreciation for someone who has or is impacting your life: a teacher – the person who delivers your mail – take a note of gratitude down to the Department of Motor Vehicles office. And finally, wear a cloth face mask when you are out in the public or in groups. The mask is not for your protection. Its protection for those you encounter. It is “loving your neighbor.” Have a happy “Love Your Neighbor Day”, Pastor Jim Payette United Methodist Church October 18, 2020 Prelude: Welcome - Please light a candle Interlude: Ringing the Church Bell Call To Worship: Reading from Psalm 99:1-3 Unison Invocation Lord, May your trumpet sound in the songs we sing, in the prayers we pray, and in the lives we lead. By Rev. John Tucker
District Superintendent of the Crater Lake District in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. There is a saying in sports that goes like this, “Don’t let one loss turn into two losses!” What this statement means is that a team needs to learn from a loss and not let it defeat their spirit and work ethic. If they do not learn from it, they will allow that loss to cascade into other losses. It makes a lot of sense. I write this because I hope our churches won’t let COVID-19 lead to other church losses. Here is a list of the ways we could let COVID-19 beat us more than once:
These are very trying times. The wildfires have wreaked havoc. Political anxiety is at an all-time high. Take a breath. Pursue a spiritual discipline. Respond with love and patience. We need to be the people we are supposed to be because the world needs that right now. We need it too. Rev. John Tucker serves as District Superintendent of the Crater Lake District in the Oregon-Idaho Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church. Wednesday Evening Bible Study

Payette United Methodist Church World Communion Sunday October 4, 2020 Welcome Please have the elements of communion prepared. We will celebrate communion later in the service. Prelude Brethren, We Have Met to Worship William Moore Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle CALL TO WORSHIP Musical Interlude Shall We Gather at the River? Robert Lowery Ringing the church bell Hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” UMH #526 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. The Apostles’ Creed (in unison) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Unison Invocation Gracious and holy God, We ask that this time might correct our thinking and influence our actions. We come to worship you and only you. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen. Hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” TFWS #2158 I am weak, but thou art strong; Jesus keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to thee. Just a closer walk with thee; grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to thee; let it be, dear Lord, let it be. Through this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my sorrow shares? None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee. Just a closer walk with thee; grant it, Jesus, is my plea, Daily walking close to thee; let it be, dear Lord, let it be. The Lord’s Prayer and The Lord's Prayer (in Unison) Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us, and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. Message “He Was Talking About Them” Matthew 21:33-46 The Communion Service Communion Hymn “Open Our Eyes Lord” TFWS #2086 Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, To reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, Who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us confess our sin before God and one another. Prayer of Confession and Pardon Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Forgive us, we pray. Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you. Forgive us, we pray. We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers. Forgive us, we pray. We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Bread and Cup Please take the bread. Please take the cup. Please pray: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Strengthen us in mind, body, and soul for the days ahead. May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Unison Benediction May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors. God be with you ‘til we meet again. Postlude They’ll Know We Are Christians by Our Love arr. Fred Bock Weekly Announcements Thank you for Worshiping with us today!
