August 28 2022 – 11:00 AM Welcome and Announcements Gathering Hymn: “Family of God” I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, For I’m part of the family, the family of God. Calling Song: “How Majestic Is Your Name” TFWS# 2023 2x O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. Responsive Reading: Psalm 112 (CEB) - Leslie Olson One: Praise the Lord! Those who honor the Lord, who adore God’s commandments, are truly happy! Many: Their descendants will be strong throughout the land. The offspring of those who do right will be blessed; One: wealth and riches will be in their houses. Their righteousness stands forever. Many: They shine in the dark for others who do right. They are merciful, compassionate, and righteous. One: Those who lend generously are good people—as are those who conduct their affairs with justice. Many: Yes, these sorts of people will never be shaken; the righteous will be remembered forever! One: They won’t be frightened at bad news. Their hearts are steady, trusting in the Lord. Many: Their hearts are firm; they aren’t afraid. In the end, they will witness the powers’ defeat. One: They give freely to those in need. Their righteousness stands forever. Their strength increases gloriously. Many: The powers see all this and fume; they grind their teeth, but disappear to nothing. What the powers want to see happen comes to nothing! Unison Invocation God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, amen. Scripture Readings: One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Lord of all power and might, the author and giver of all good things: Graft in our hearts the love of your Name; increase in us true religion; nourish us with all goodness; and bring forth in us the fruit of good works; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading - Sirach 10:12-18 (CEB) Human arrogance begins when people rebel against the Lord, and their hearts rebel against the one who made them. The beginning of arrogance is sin, and those who cling to it will pour out blasphemy. For this reason the Lord brings calamities upon them, and he ruins them completely. The Lord destroyed the thrones of rulers, and he raised up the gentle in their place. The Lord plucked up the roots of nations, and he planted the humble in their place. The Lord ruined the lands of the nations, and he leveled them to their very foundations. He removed some people and destroyed them, and he erased their memory from the earth. Humans were not created to be arrogant, nor were those born of women made to indulge in anger. One: The story of God for the people of God! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading - Luke 14:1, 7-14 (CEB) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! One Sabbath, when Jesus went to share a meal in the home of one of the leaders of the Pharisees, they were watching him closely. When Jesus noticed how the guests sought out the best seats at the table, he told them a parable. “When someone invites you to a wedding celebration, don’t take your seat in the place of honor. Someone more highly regarded than you could have been invited by your host. The host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give your seat to this other person.’ Embarrassed, you will take your seat in the least important place. Instead, when you receive an invitation, go and sit in the least important place. When your host approaches you, he will say, ‘Friend, move up here to a better seat.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. All who lift themselves up will be brought low, and those who make themselves low will be lifted up.” Then Jesus said to the person who had invited him, “When you host a lunch or dinner, don’t invite your friends, your brothers and sisters, your relatives, or rich neighbors. If you do, they will invite you in return and that will be your reward. Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, crippled, lame, and blind. And you will be blessed because they can’t repay you. Instead, you will be repaid when the just are resurrected.” One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Remove from your people the pride of place and the pursuit of power that mocks humility. Open our hearts in generosity and justice to the neglected and lonely, that in showing esteem for others, we may honor and please you through Jesus Christ in the Holy Spirit. We praise your abiding guidance, O God, for you sent us Jesus, our Teacher and Messiah, to model for us the way of love for all creation. We offer these prayers of love on behalf of ourselves and our neighbors, on behalf of your creation and our fellow creatures. Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear us.”) Loving God, open our ears to hear your word and draw us closer to you, that the whole world may be one with you as you are one with us in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. And now, because we often fail to love, because we acknowledge that we are sinners living in sinful systems, and because we acknowledge that we are all in need of God’s mercy and grace, let us confess our sins. Many: God of the living and the dead, We confess that we have sinned against you by what we have done and by what we have not done, We remember our broken promises and missed opportunities; The gifts we have taken for granted; The love we have not shown or returned; Forgive us, comfort and heal us, lift our guilt from us, That we may walk in freedom and grace to the glory of your name. Amen. One: May God who is both power and love forgive us and free us from our sins; heal and strength us by the power of the Holy Spirit; and bring us to new life through Christ our Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are a forgiven people! Many: Thanks be to God! Prayer Hymn: “Be Still, My Soul” UMH#534 vs. 1 Be still, my soul, The Lord is on thy side Bear patiently, the cross of grief or pain Leave to thy God, to order and provide In every change, He faithful will remain Be still, my soul, thy best thy heavenly friend Through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 13:1-8, 15-16 (CEB) Keep loving each other like family. Don’t neglect to open up your homes to guests, because by doing this some have been hosts to angels without knowing it. Remember prisoners as if you were in prison with them, and people who are mistreated as if you were in their place. Marriage must be honored in every respect, with no cheating on the relationship, because God will judge the sexually immoral person and the person who commits adultery. Your way of life should be free from the love of money, and you should be content with what you have. After all, he has said, I will never leave you or abandon you. This is why we can confidently say, The Lord is my helper, and I won’t be afraid. What can people do to me? Remember your leaders who spoke God’s word to you. Imitate their faith as you consider the way their lives turned out. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever! So let’s continually offer up a sacrifice of praise through him, which is the fruit from our lips that confess his name. Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with these kinds of sacrifices. The story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! Response Song “The Servant Song” TFWS #2222 Music Team Brother, sister, let me serve you; Let me be as Christ to you; Pray that I might have the grace to Let you be my servant, too. We are pilgrims on a journey; We are family on the road; We are here to help each other Walk the miles and bear the load. I will hold the Christ-light for you In the nighttime of your fear; I will hold my hand out to you, Speak the peace you long to hear. I will weep when you are weeping; When you laugh I’ll laugh with you; I will share your joys and sorrows Till we’ve seen this journey through. When we sing to God in Heaven We shall find such harmony, Born of all we’ve known together Of Christ’s love and agony. Brother, sister, let me serve you; Let me be as Christ to you; Pray that I might have the grace to Let you be my servant, too. August 21, 2022 – 11:00 AM Welcome and Announcements Gathering Hymn: “Family of God” I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, For I’m part of the family, the family of God. Calling Song: “Praise to the Lord, the Almighty” UMH#139 vs.1,2,5 Praise to the Lord, the Almighty, the King of creation. O my soul, praise him, for he is thy health and salvation! All ye who hear, now to his temple draw near; join me in glad adoration! Praise to the Lord, who o’er all things so wondrously reigneth, Who, as on wings of an eagle, uplifteth, sustaineth. Hast thou not seen How thy desires all have been Granted in what He ordaineth? Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore him! All that hath life and breath, come now with praises before him! Let the amen sound from his people again; gladly forever adore him. Responsive Reading: Psalm 103:1-8 (CEB) One: Let my whole being bless the Lord! Let everything inside me bless God’s holy name! Many: Let my whole being bless the Lord and never forget all of God’s good deeds: One: how God forgives all your sins, heals all your sickness, Many: saves your life from the pit, crowns you with faithful love and compassion, One: and satisfies you with plenty of good things so that your youth is made fresh like an eagle’s. Many: The Lord works righteousness; does justice for all who are oppressed. One: God’s ways were made known to Moses; God’s deeds made known to the Israelites. Many: The Lord is compassionate and merciful, very patient, and full of faithful love. Unison Invocation God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, amen. Scripture Readings One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Grant, O merciful God, that your Church, being gathered together in unity by your Holy Spirit, may show forth your power among all people, to the glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading - p.688, Isaiah 58:9-14 (CEB) Then you will call, and the Lord will answer; you will cry for help, and God will say, “I’m here.” If you remove the yoke from among you, the finger-pointing, the wicked speech; if you open your heart to the hungry, and provide abundantly for those who are afflicted, your light will shine in the darkness, and your gloom will be like the noon. The Lord will guide you continually and provide for you, even in parched places. God will rescue your bones. You will be like a watered garden, like a spring of water that won’t run dry. They will rebuild ancient ruins on your account; the foundations of generations past you will restore. You will be called Mender of Broken Walls, Restorer of Livable Streets. If you stop trampling the Sabbath, stop doing whatever you want on my holy day, and consider the Sabbath a delight, sacred to the Lord, honored, and honor it instead of doing things your way, seeking what you want and doing business as usual, then you will take delight in the Lord. I will let you ride on the heights of the earth; I will sustain you with the heritage of your ancestor Jacob. The mouth of the Lord has spoken. One: The story of God for the people of God! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading - p.76, Luke 13:10-17 (CEB) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! One: Jesus was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. A woman was there who had been disabled by a spirit for eighteen years. She was bent over and couldn’t stand up straight. When he saw her, Jesus called her to him and said, “Woman, you are set free from your sickness.” He placed his hands on her and she straightened up at once and praised God. The synagogue leader, incensed that Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded, “There are six days during which work is permitted. Come and be healed on those days, not on the Sabbath day.” The Lord replied, “Hypocrites! Don’t each of you on the Sabbath untie your ox or donkey from its stall and lead it out to get a drink? Then isn’t it necessary that this woman, a daughter of Abraham, bound by Satan for eighteen long years, be set free from her bondage on the Sabbath day?” When he said these things, all his opponents were put to shame, but all those in the crowd rejoiced at all the extraordinary things he was doing. One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Praise Hymn: “10,000 Reasons” Chorus Bless the Lord, O my soul, O my soul, worship His holy Name. Sing like never before, O my soul. I’ll worship Your holy Name. The sun comes up, it’s a new day dawning; It’s time to sing Your song again. Whatever may pass and whatever lies before me, Let me be singing when the evening comes. You’re rich in love and You’re slow to anger, Your Name is great and Your heart is kind; For all Your goodness I will keep on singing, Ten thousand reasons for my heart to find. And on that day when my strength is failing, The end draws near and my time has come; Still my soul sings Your praise unending, Ten thousand years and then forevermore. Prayers of the People One: God of power and justice, like Jeremiah you weep over those who wander from you, turn aside to other gods, and enter into chaos and destruction. By your tears and through your mercy, teach us your ways and write them on our hearts so that we may follow faithfully the path you show us. God of mercy and healing, you who hear the cries of those in need, receive these petitions of your people that all who are troubled may know peace, comfort, and courage. Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear us.”) God of love, hear our prayer for all nations, that we may reflect your truth, justice, and mercy; for all of creation; that we may be good stewards and truly care for creation as you do; for your holy church; that where we are right, we may be strengthened; that where we are in error, we may be corrected; and that where we can be a beacon of hope, we may shine forth; and for this congregation; that you may reveal Christ in us, through all of our ups and downs and faith and doubt. Life-giving God, heal our lives, that we may acknowledge your wonderful deeds and offer you thanks from generation to generation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Prayer Hymn: “Give Thanks” TFWS#2036 Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son. Give thanks with a grateful heart, Give thanks to the Holy One, Give thanks because He’s given Jesus Christ His Son. And now let the weak say, “I am strong”; Let the poor say, “I am rich because of what The Lord has done for us.” And now let the weak say, “I am strong”; Let the poor say, “I am rich because of what The Lord has done for us.” Give thanks. Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 12:18-29 (CEB) You haven’t drawn near to something that can be touched: a burning fire, darkness, shadow, a whirlwind, a blast of a trumpet, and a sound of words that made the ones who heard it beg that there wouldn’t be one more word. They couldn’t stand the command, “If even a wild animal touches the mountain, it must be stoned.” The sight was so frightening that Moses said, “I’m terrified and shaking!” But you have drawn near to Mount Zion, the city of the living God, heavenly Jerusalem, to countless angels in a festival gathering, to the assembly of God’s firstborn children who are registered in heaven, to God the judge of all, to the spirits of the righteous who have been made perfect, to Jesus the mediator of the new covenant, and to the sprinkled blood that speaks better than Abel’s blood. See to it that you don’t resist the one who is speaking. If the people didn’t escape when they refused to listen to the one who warned them on earth, how will we escape if we reject the one who is warning from heaven? God’s voice shook the earth then, but now God has made a promise: Still once more I will shake not only the earth but heaven also. The words “still once more” reveal the removal of what is shaken—the things that are part of this creation—so that what isn’t shaken will remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom that can’t be shaken, let’s continue to express our gratitude. With this gratitude, let’s serve in a way that is pleasing to God with respect and awe, because our God really is a consuming fire. The story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! Response Song “From the Inside Out” A thousand times I’ve failed Still your mercy remains And should I stumble again I’m caught in your grace Everlasting, your light will shine when all else fades Neverending, your glory goes beyond all fame Your will above all else My purpose remains The art of losing myself In bringing you praise Everlasting, your light will shine when all else fades Neverending, your glory goes beyond all fame In my heart and my soul, I give you control Consume me from the inside out, Lord Let justice and praise become my embrace To love you from the inside out Your will above all else My purpose remains The art of losing myself In bringing you praise Everlasting, your light will shine when all else fades Neverending, your glory goes beyond all fame In my heart and my soul, I give you control Consume me from the inside out, Lord Let justice and praise become my embrace To love you from the inside out Everlasting, your light will shine when all else fades Neverending, your glory goes beyond all fame And the cry of my heart is to bring you praise From the inside out, Lord, my soul cries out Everlasting, your light will shine when all else fades Neverending, your glory goes beyond all fame And the cry of my heart is to bring you praise From the inside out, Lord, my soul cries out From the inside out, Lord, my soul cries out Commitment Hymn: “How Firm a Foundation” UMH#529 vs. 1,2,5 How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in his excellent word! What more can he say than to you he hath said, to you who for refuge to Jesus have fled? "Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, for I am thy God and will still give thee aid; I'll strengthen and help thee, and cause thee to stand upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. “The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; that soul, though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no, never forsake.” Sending Forth/Unison Benediction One: May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Refrain: We're marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; we're marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God. Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God; but children of the heavenly King, but children of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad, may speak their joys abroad. (Refrain) Then let our songs abound, and every tear be dry; we're marching through Emmanuel's ground, we're marching through Emmanuel's ground, to fairer worlds on high, to fairer worlds on high. (Refrain) Responsive Reading: Psalm 82 (CEB) One: God takes the stand in the divine council; God gives judgment among the gods: Many: “How long will you judge unjustly by granting favor to the wicked? Selah! One: Give justice to the lowly and the orphan; maintain the right of the poor and the destitute! Many: Rescue the lowly and the needy. Deliver them from the power of the wicked! One: They don’t know; they don’t understand; they wander around in the dark. All the earth’s foundations shake. Many: I hereby declare, “You are gods, children of the Most High—all of you! One: But you will die like mortals; you will fall down like any prince.” Many: Rise up, God! Judge the earth because you hold all nations in your possession! Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 23:23-29 (MSG) “Am I not a God near at hand”—God’s Decree-- “and not a God far off? Can anyone hide out in a corner where I can’t see them?” God’s Decree. “Am I not present everywhere, whether seen or unseen?” God’s Decree. “I know what they’re saying, all these prophets who preach lies using me as their text, saying ‘I had this dream! I had this dream!’ How long do I have to put up with this? Do these prophets give two cents about me as they preach their lies and spew out their grandiose delusions? They swap dreams with one another, feed on each other’s delusive dreams, trying to distract my people from me just as their ancestors were distracted by the no-god Baal. “You prophets who do nothing but dream-- go ahead and tell your silly dreams. But you prophets who have a message from me-- tell it truly and faithfully. What does straw have in common with wheat? Nothing else is like God’s Decree. Isn’t my Message like fire?” God’s Decree. “Isn’t it like a sledgehammer busting a rock? One: The story of God for the people of God! Many: Thanks be to God! One: “I’ve come to start a fire on this earth—how I wish it were blazing right now! I’ve come to change everything, turn everything rightside up—how I long for it to be finished! Do you think I came to smooth things over and make everything nice? Not so. I’ve come to disrupt and confront! From now on, when you find five in a house, it will be-- Three against two, and two against three; Father against son, and son against father; Mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; Mother-in-law against bride, and bride against mother-in-law.” Then he turned to the crowd: “When you see clouds coming in from the west, you say, ‘Storm’s coming’—and you’re right. And when the wind comes out of the south, you say, ‘This’ll be a hot one’—and you’re right. Frauds! You know how to tell a change in the weather, so don’t tell me you can’t tell a change in the season, the God-season we’re in right now. One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Prayer Hymn: “Open Our Eyes” TFWS#2086 X2 Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 11:29-12:2 (CEB) By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if they were on dry land, but when the Egyptians tried it, they were drowned. By faith Jericho’s walls fell after the people marched around them for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute wasn’t killed with the disobedient because she welcomed the spies in peace. What more can I say? I would run out of time if I told you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Through faith they conquered kingdoms, brought about justice, realized promises, shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, escaped from the edge of the sword, found strength in weakness, were mighty in war, and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured and refused to be released so they could gain a better resurrection. But others experienced public shame by being taunted and whipped; they were even put in chains and in prison. They were stoned to death, they were cut in two, and they died by being murdered with swords. They went around wearing the skins of sheep and goats, needy, oppressed, and mistreated. The world didn’t deserve them. They wandered around in deserts, mountains, caves, and holes in the ground. All these people didn’t receive what was promised, though they were given approval for their faith. God provided something better for us so they wouldn’t be made perfect without us. So then, with endurance, let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let’s throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith’s pioneer and perfecter. He endured the cross, ignoring the shame, for the sake of the joy that was laid out in front of him, and sat down at the right side of God’s throne. The story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! Response Song “Glorious Ruins” When the mountains fall and the tempest roars, you are with me When creation folds, still my soul will soar on your mercy I’ll walk through the fire with my head lifted high And my spirit revived in your story And I’ll look to the cross as my failure is lost In the light of your glorious grace So let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing When the world caves in, still my soul will cling to your promise When my courage ends, let my heart find strength in your presence I’ll walk through the fire with my head lifted high And my spirit revived in your story And I’ll look to the cross as my failure is lost In the light of your glorious grace So let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing Let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing Commitment Hymn: “Joy in the Morning” TFWS#2284 all vs. There'll be joy in the morning on that day, there'll be joy in the morning on that day, for the daylight will dawn when the darkness is gone, there'll be joy in the morning on that day. Many: The Lord looks down from heaven; God sees all humankind. One: From where God sits enthroned God watches all the inhabitants of the earth-- Many: God, who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. One: A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. Many: The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. One: Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear God, on those who hope in God’s steadfast love, Many: to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine. One: Our soul waits for the Lord; God is our help and shield. Many: Our heart is glad in the Lord; because we trust in God’s holy name. One: Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Unison Invocation God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, Amen. Today's Scripture Readings One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading: Genesis 15:1-6 (NRSV) After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the Lord, and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. One: God’s word for God’s people! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading: Luke 12:32-40 (NRSV) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! One: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. “But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Praise Hymn: “Your Grace is Enough” Music Team Great is your faithfulness, oh God You wrestle with the sinner’s heart You lead us by still waters into mercy And nothing can keep us apart So remember your people Remember your children Remember your promise, oh God Your grace is enough Your gracie is enough Your grace is enough for me Great is your love and justice, God You use the weak to lead the strong You lead us in the song of your salvation And all your people sing along So remember your people Remember your children Remember your promise, oh God Your grace is enough Your grace is enough Your grace is enough for me Prayers of the People One: Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. For Christ is risen. Many: Christ is risen, indeed! One: Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear our prayer.”) One: Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as Christ loves us. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. Take joy my King In what You hear Let it be a sweet, sweet sound In Your ear Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 (CEB) Praise Song “Let Our Faith Be Not Alone” Music Team Oh God, you are a mystery We crowd the streets in hopes to see The Son of Man before our eyes His holiness uncompromised Oh God, we have a history The saints who told of Calvary And the martyrs who laid down their lives For the cause of Christ we’re sacrificed Let our faith be not alone (let our faith be not alone) May our hearts be not of stone (may our hearts be not of stone) Give us souls that never close (give us souls that never close) To the grace that you bestow (to the grace that you bestow) May our eyes be quick to see (may our eyes be quick to see) That you are here, you’ve come to rescue me You are here, you’ve come to rescue me Communion Service One: The Lord be with you! Many: And also with you! One: Lift up your hearts! Many: We lift them up to the Lord! One: Let us give thanks! Many: It is just and right to give thanks. Apostles’ Creed One: It is just and right and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give our thanks and praise to God. Now, let us join together in confessing our faith through the words of the Apostles’ Creed: Many: We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer over the Bread and Cup One: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Story spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world, who by your Spirit was anointed to preach good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, set at liberty those who are oppressed. Christ healed the sick, fed the hungry, ate with sinners, and established the new covenant for forgiveness of sins. We live in the hope of His coming again. (Lift the bread, break it) We remember that on the night that our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and he gave it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you. Take and eat - all of you - in remembrance of me.” (Lift the cup) Likewise, after the supper, he took the cup, and after giving thanks, he said, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.” And so, Lord God, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to you in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with the sacrifice of Christ for us, as we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Many: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. One: Hear us most merciful Father, we know you create and intend all things to be means of communion with you, so sanctify these gifts, send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this cup, that, overshadowed by His life-giving power, they may become for us the Body and Blood of your son, Jesus the Messiah, and we may be unified, healed, forgiven, filled with your grace, kindled with the fire of your love, and renewed for the service of your kingdom. Make yourself known in this supper and through us, that we may be for the world the Body of Christ, redeemed by His blood until Christ comes in final victory. All this we pray through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ; all praise, honor, and glory, are yours now and forever, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God. And all the people said: Many: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer One: Because we all partake of the one bread and the one cup, we, though we are many, are one. So let us join in together in praying the prayer that the Lord taught all of the disciples to pray. Let us be so bold as to say: Many: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, And deliver us from evil. For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Giving the Bread and the Cup One: (Give instructions for coming forward to receive) The Table is prepared. All who are hungry and thirsty are invited to come forward to receive these gifts of grace. May Christ be fully formed in you. Come forward as you’re ready. Commitment Song: “Faith, While Trees Are Still in Blossom” UMH#508 vs. 1,3,5 Faith while trees are still in blossom, plans that picking if the fruit; faith can feel the thrill of harvest, when the buds begin to sprout. Long before the rains were coming, Noah went and built an ark. Abraham, the lonely migrant, saw the Light beyond the dark. Faith, believes that God is faithful, He will be who He will be. Faith accepts His call responding: "I am willing; Lord, Send me." Sending Forth One: God of love, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of our savior Jesus the Messiah; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Christ. May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Amen. Many: May the peace of the Lord go with us, wherever God may send us. May we embody the love, grace, and mercy of Christ to those we meet along the way. Amen.
