Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord.
            (Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord.)
Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord,
           (Humble yourself in the sight of the Lord,)

And he (And he) shall lift (shall lift) you up.

Responsive Reading from Psalm 111
Leader: I will praise the Lord with all that I have wherever good people gather.
People: Great are the works of the Lord; they are pondered by all who delight in them.
Leader: Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.
People: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom;
All: To him belongs eternal praise.

Unison Invocation
Lord Jesus,
We know you as both Lion and Lamb.
Following you we see both your strength and humility.
We come to this time of worship in awe of your power and overwhelmed that you welcome us into the family of God.
Amen.

Old Testament Reading - Deuteronomy 18:15-19
Gospel Reading - Mark 1:14-20

Prayers of the People

Hymn     "Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing"
UMH #400
Come, thou Fount of every blessing,
Tune my heart to sing thy grace;
Streams of mercy, never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise.
Teach me some melodious sonnet,
Sung by flaming tongues above.
Praise the mount! I’m fixed upon it,
Mount of thy redeeming love.

O to grace how great a debtor
Daily I’m constrained to be!
Let thy goodness, like a fetter,
Bind my wandering heart to thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it,
Prone to leave the God I love;
Here’s my heart, O take and seal it,
Seal it for thy courts above.

Message        “Knowing Isn’t Everything”       1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Commitment Hymn     "Lord, I Want to Be a Christian"      UMH #402
Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart, in my heart;
Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

(Refrain)
In my heart, in my heart,
Lord, I want to be a Christian in my heart.

Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart, in my heart;
Lord, I want to be more loving in my heart.
(Refrain)

Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart, in my heart;
Lord, I want to be like Jesus in my heart.
(Refrain)

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Refrain
Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night.
I will go Lord, if you lead me.
I will hold your people in my heart.

I, the Lord of snow and rain, I have borne my people’s pain.
I have wept for love of them. They turn away.
I will break their hearts of stone, give them hearts for love alone.
I will speak my word to them. Whom shall I send?
(Refrain)

I, the Lord of wind and flame, I will tend the poor and lame.

Prelude

Welcome

Interlude

Welcoming the neighborhood to worship

Call To Worship: Reading from Psalm 139

Leader: You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.
People: You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.
Leader: Before a word is on my tongue, you, Lord, know it completely. Such knowledge is too great for me, too lofty for me to attain.
People: Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.
All: See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Calling Song   Change My Heart, O God      TFWS #2152
Change my heart, O God, make it ever true.
Change my heart, O God, may I be like you.

I am weak but thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I’ll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk, close to thee.

Refrain
Just a closer walk with thee, grant it Jesus, is my plea,
Daily walking close to thee;
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toils and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but thee, dear Lord, none but thee.

When this feeble life is o’er, time for me will be no more;
Guide me gently, safely o’er to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore.

A Letter to the Church

1/11/2021

1 Comment

January 11, 2021

You are the light of the world…let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.

                                                               -Jesus of Nazareth
                                                                 From his Sermon on the Mount

As it is written, “God’s name is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you.”

                                                                - Paul the Apostle
                                                                   From his letter to the First Century Church in Rome

This letter is for the church. I’m not an elected or appointed public servant. I am not a prosecutor or a peace officer. I am a Christian minister. So, speaking to the church, I want to be clear. The sight of “Jesus Saves” and “God Bless America” signs displayed in the mob that violently stormed the U. S. Capitol last Wednesday is a picture of Jesus and his good news that is blasphemous.

As a ministry student I was mentored by Alan Dunbar. Once, during a “let me give you some advice” sessions, he said, “The world is watching. The world is overhearing. They usually expect more of us than we do. Jim, Watch your actions. Watch your mouth.”
The world is watching and the church is not looking very good. Let’s begin the rehabilitation with some solitary time with Jesus admitting our desperate need for his life altering power.

As my mentor said, “Watch your actions. Watch your mouth.” I’d add, “Guard your heart.”

You are loved,
Pastor Jim

to Canaan's fair and happy land,
where my possessions lie.

Refrain:
I am bound for the promised land,
I am bound for the promised land;
oh, who will come and go with me?
I am bound for the promised land.

No chilling winds or poisonous breath
can reach that healthful shore;
sickness and sorrow, pain and death,
are felt and feared no more.
[Refrain]

When I shall reach that happy place,
I'll be forever blest,
for I shall see my Father's face,
and in his bosom rest
. [Refrain]

A Message from Pastor Jim

1/7/2021

0 Comments

January 7, 2021

My yesterday began with an early morning doctor’s appointment (nothing serious). After some office work I went home for lunch with plans to watch Congress ascertain the results of the Elector College.

That’s when the day’s priorities changed.

All else was put aside while Pam and I watched with disbelief, sadness, horror, anger, and fear as a violent mob (some carrying Christian symbols) violently pushed their way into the U. S. Capitol.

Yesterday’s violence and all that led up to it reveals a lot about our nation. It reveals something about me and you. We are not nearly as “good” as we think.

How could we use today? Here are some suggestions.

Start with confession, repentance, and humility. Tomorrow we can go to work “fixing” things. Today we need to work on ourselves.

Sit it with Jesus for a while by reading or listening to a part of his Sermon on the Mount (how about Matthew 7?). Ask him to reveal and convict us of our weaknesses, prejudices, and failures.

Commit yourself to do nothing that will produce more division.
Focus on some small glimmer of light, “The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” John 1:5

May God refine our anger and disperse our fear in Jesus’ name.
You are loved,
Pastor Jim

Second Sunday of Christmas

Prelude

Welcome

Welcoming the Light of Christ – please light a candle

Interlude

Inviting the neighborhood to worship

Call to Worship:
The Apostles Creed

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy universal church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.

Carol         Angels from the Realms of Glory
UMH #220
Sages, leave your contemplations,
brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations;
ye have seen his natal star.
Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

Saints, before the altar bending,
watching long in hope and fear;
Suddenly the Lord, descending,
in his temple will appear.

Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.

Unison Invocation
O God our Father, who sent your Son to be King of kings and Lord of lords; we pray that all the kingdoms of this world may become His kingdom and learn from him the way of grace and truth.
In His name we pray. Amen.

New Testament Reading     Ephesians 1:3-14

Hymn    We Three Kings     UMH #254

We three kings of Orient are;
bearing gifts we traverse afar,
field and fountain, moor and mountain,
following yonder star.

Refrain
O star of wonder, star of light,
star with royal beauty bright,
westward leading, still proceeding,
guide us to thy perfect light.

Glorious now behold him arise;
King and God and sacrifice;
Alleluia, Alleluia,
Sounds through the earth and skies.

Refrain

Message          “The Dynamic Duo”               John 1:1, 10-18

The Communion Service

Communion Hymn     Joy to the World     UMH 246
Joy to the world, the Lord has come!
Let earth receive her King;
let every heart prepare him room,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven and nature sing,
and heaven, and heaven, and nature sing.

Leader: Our Lord invites to his table all who love him,
Who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.
Let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Prayer of Confession and Pardon
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart.
Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled.
Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you.
We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers.
Forgive us, we pray.
 We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray.
Amen.

Hear the good news;
Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us.
In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.

Response: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
Thanks be to God!

Bread and Cup
Please take the bread.
Please take the cup.

Please pray:
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead.
May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.

Carol        Go tell it on the Mountain     UMH #25
Go, tell it on the mountain, over the hills and everywhere; go, tell it on the mountain, that Jesus Christ is born.
