Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Calling Song “While We Are Waiting”
While we are waiting, come
While we are waiting, come
Jesus our Lord, Emmanuel,
While we are waiting, come.

With pow'r and glory, come
With pow'r and glory, come
Jesus our Lord Emmanuel
With pow'r and glory, come

Come, Savior, quickly come
Come, Savior, quickly come
Jesus our Lord Emmanuel
 Come, Savior, quickly come

Responsive Reading from Psalm 25

Leader: To you, O LORD, I lift up my soul.
People: O my God, in you I trust; do not let me be put to shame; do not  let my enemies exult over me.
Leader: Do not let those who wait for you be put to shame; let them be  ashamed who wantonly treacherous.
People: Make me to know your ways, O LORD; teach me your paths.
Leader: Lead me in your truth, and teach me, for you are the God of my  salvation; for you I wait all day long.
All: Be mindful of your mercy, O LORD, and of your steadfast love,  For they have been from of old.

Unison Invocation
How silently, how silently the wondrous gift is given.
We will be silent now, O Lord, and expectant…
May we receive the gifts we need, so that we might become
the gifts others need.
We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Service of Baptism

Hymn “O Little Town of Bethlehem” UMH #230
Oh little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
Yet in thy dark streets shineth, the everlasting light
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary, and gathered all above
While mortals sleep the angels keep their watch of wondering love
Oh morning stars together, proclaim thy holy birth.
And praises sing to God the king, and peace to men on earth.

Old Testament Reading - Jeremiah 33:14-16
Gospel Reading - Luke 21:29-36

God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God!

Stewardship Moment

Doxology “Joy to the World” UMH #246
Joy to the world! The Lord is come
Let earth receive her King!
Let every heart prepare Him room
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven and nature sing
And heaven, and heaven and nature sing

Message “A Bunch of Unrepentant Hopefuls” 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13

Commitment Hymn “Emmanuel” UMH #204

Emmanuel, Emmanuel,
His name is called Emmanuel.
God with us, revealed in us,
His name is called Emmanuel.

Unison Benediction
Be people of hope.
Let hope live in your heart and share the hope of Christ with all you meet.
Share hope by listening to someone’s story. Share hope by praying for our world.
As you go out into the wonder of God’s creations, share hope with those you meet.
Amen.

Prelude

Welcome and Announcements

Interlude

Welcoming the Light of Christ and inviting the neighborhood to worship.

*Call to Worship
Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit

Hymn “Open Our Eyes Lord” TFWS #2086

Open our eyes, Lord,
we want to see Jesus,
to reach out and touch him,
and say that we love him.
Open our ears, Lord,
and help us to listen.
Open our eyes, Lord,
we want to see Jesus.

The Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen

Unison Invocation
Gracious and holy God, We ask that this time might correct our thinking and influence our actions. We come to worship you and only you. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen.

Hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” TFWS #2158

I am weak, but thou art strong;
Jesus, keep me from all wrong;
I'll be satisfied as long
as I walk, let me walk close to thee.

Refrain:
Just a closer walk with thee,
grant it, Jesus, is my plea,
daily walking close to thee:
Let it be, dear Lord, let it be.

Through this world of toil and snares,
if I falter, Lord, who cares?
Who with me my burden shares?
None but Thee, dear Lord, none but thee.
 [Refrain]

When my feeble life is o'er,
time for me will be no more;
guide me gently, safely o'er
to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore.
 [Refrain]

Old Testament Reading - 1 Kings 17: 8-16
Gospel Reading - Mark 12: 38-44

God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God!

The Lord’s Prayer

Message “When What You’ve Got is Not a Lot” Mark 12: 38-44 by Rev. Gene Schandorff

The Communion Service

Communion Hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” UMH #526
What a friend we have in Jesus,
all our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
everything to God in prayer!
O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
all because we do not carry
everything to God in prayer.

Have we trials and temptations?
Is there trouble anywhere?
We should never be discouraged;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Can we find a friend so faithful
who will all our sorrows share?
Jesus knows our every weakness;
take it to the Lord in prayer.

Are we weak and heavy laden,
cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Savior, still our refuge;
take it to the Lord in prayer.
Do thy friends despise, forsake thee?
Take it to the Lord in prayer!
In his arms he'll take and shield thee;
thou wilt find a solace there.

Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another.  Let us confess our sin before God and one another.

Unison Prayer of Confession and Pardon
Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Forgive us, we pray.
Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you.
Forgive us, we pray.
We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers.
Forgive us, we pray.
We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen.

Leader: Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven.
All: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

Bread and Cup
Guidance for the Communion Service will be provided. After we have received the bread and the cup, please join the congregation as we pray:
Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery
in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead.
May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name.
Amen.

Unison Benediction
May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you
wherever he may send you.
May he guide you through the wilderness,
protect you through the storm.
May he bring you home rejoicing
at the wonders he has shown you.
May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.
