August 14, 2022 – 11:00 AM Welcome and Announcements Gathering Hymn: “Family of God” Calling Song: “Marching to Zion” UMH#733 vs. 1,2,4 Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known; join in a song with sweet accord, join in a song with sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus surround the throne. Refrain: We're marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful Zion; we're marching upward to Zion, the beautiful city of God. Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God; but children of the heavenly King, but children of the heavenly King may speak their joys abroad, may speak their joys abroad. (Refrain) Then let our songs abound, and every tear be dry; we're marching through Emmanuel's ground, we're marching through Emmanuel's ground, to fairer worlds on high, to fairer worlds on high. (Refrain) Responsive Reading: Psalm 82 (CEB) One: God takes the stand in the divine council; God gives judgment among the gods: Many: “How long will you judge unjustly by granting favor to the wicked? Selah! One: Give justice to the lowly and the orphan; maintain the right of the poor and the destitute! Many: Rescue the lowly and the needy. Deliver them from the power of the wicked! One: They don’t know; they don’t understand; they wander around in the dark. All the earth’s foundations shake. Many: I hereby declare, “You are gods, children of the Most High—all of you! One: But you will die like mortals; you will fall down like any prince.” Many: Rise up, God! Judge the earth because you hold all nations in your possession! Unison Invocation God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, Amen. Scripture Readings One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Almighty God, you have given your only Son to be for us a sacrifice for sin, and also an example of godly life: Give us grace to receive thankfully the fruits of his redeeming work, and to follow daily in the blessed steps of his most holy life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 23:23-29 (MSG) “Am I not a God near at hand”—God’s Decree-- “and not a God far off? Can anyone hide out in a corner where I can’t see them?” God’s Decree. “Am I not present everywhere, whether seen or unseen?” God’s Decree. “I know what they’re saying, all these prophets who preach lies using me as their text, saying ‘I had this dream! I had this dream!’ How long do I have to put up with this? Do these prophets give two cents about me as they preach their lies and spew out their grandiose delusions? They swap dreams with one another, feed on each other’s delusive dreams, trying to distract my people from me just as their ancestors were distracted by the no-god Baal. “You prophets who do nothing but dream-- go ahead and tell your silly dreams. But you prophets who have a message from me-- tell it truly and faithfully. What does straw have in common with wheat? Nothing else is like God’s Decree. Isn’t my Message like fire?” God’s Decree. “Isn’t it like a sledgehammer busting a rock? One: The story of God for the people of God! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading: Luke 12:49-56 (MSG) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! One: “I’ve come to start a fire on this earth—how I wish it were blazing right now! I’ve come to change everything, turn everything rightside up—how I long for it to be finished! Do you think I came to smooth things over and make everything nice? Not so. I’ve come to disrupt and confront! From now on, when you find five in a house, it will be-- Three against two, and two against three; Father against son, and son against father; Mother against daughter, and daughter against mother; Mother-in-law against bride, and bride against mother-in-law.” Then he turned to the crowd: “When you see clouds coming in from the west, you say, ‘Storm’s coming’—and you’re right. And when the wind comes out of the south, you say, ‘This’ll be a hot one’—and you’re right. Frauds! You know how to tell a change in the weather, so don’t tell me you can’t tell a change in the season, the God-season we’re in right now. One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Praise Hymn: “Jesus” There is a truth older than the ages There is a promise of things yet to come There is one born for our salvation Jesus There is a light that overwhelms the darkness There is a Kingdom that forever reigns There is freedom from the chains that bind us Jesus, Jesus Who walks on the waters Who speaks to the sea Who stands in the fire beside me He roars like a lion He bled as the lamb He carries my healing in his hands, Jesus There is a name I call in times of trouble There is a song that comforts in the night There is a voice that calms the storm that rages He is Jesus, Jesus Who walks on the waters Who speaks to the sea Who stands in the fire beside me He roars like a lion He bled as the lamb He carries my healing in his hands, Jesus Prayers of the People One: God of justice, your word is light and truth. Let your face shine on us to restore us, that we may walk in your way, seeking justice and doing good. Lord God, friend of those in need, your Son Jesus has untied our burdens and healed our spirits. We lift up the prayers of our hearts for those still burdened, those seeking healing, those in need within the church and the world. Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear us.”) God of love, hear our prayer for all nations, that we may reflect your truth, justice, and mercy; for all of creation; that we may be good stewards and truly care for creation as you do; for your holy church; that where we are right, we may be strengthened; that where we are in error, we may be corrected; and that where we can be a beacon of hope, we may shine forth; and for this congregation; that you may reveal Christ in us, through all of our ups and downs and faith and doubt. Hear our prayers, that we may love you with our whole being and willingly share the concerns of our neighbors. Amen. And now, because we often fail to love, because we acknowledge that we are sinners living in sinful systems, and because we acknowledge that we are all in need of God’s mercy and grace, let us confess our sins. Many: God of the living and the dead, We confess that we have sinned against you by what we have done and by what we have not done, We remember our broken promises and missed opportunities; The gifts we have taken for granted; The love we have not shown or returned; Forgive us, comfort and heal us, lift our guilt from us, That we may walk in freedom and grace to the glory of your name. Amen. One: May God who is both power and love forgive us and free us from our sins; heal and strength us by the power of the Holy Spirit; and bring us to new life through Christ our Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, we are a forgiven people! Many: Thanks be to God! Prayer Hymn: “Open Our Eyes” TFWS#2086 X2 Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 11:29-12:2 (CEB) By faith they crossed the Red Sea as if they were on dry land, but when the Egyptians tried it, they were drowned. By faith Jericho’s walls fell after the people marched around them for seven days. By faith Rahab the prostitute wasn’t killed with the disobedient because she welcomed the spies in peace. What more can I say? I would run out of time if I told you about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets. Through faith they conquered kingdoms, brought about justice, realized promises, shut the mouths of lions, put out raging fires, escaped from the edge of the sword, found strength in weakness, were mighty in war, and routed foreign armies. Women received back their dead by resurrection. Others were tortured and refused to be released so they could gain a better resurrection. But others experienced public shame by being taunted and whipped; they were even put in chains and in prison. They were stoned to death, they were cut in two, and they died by being murdered with swords. They went around wearing the skins of sheep and goats, needy, oppressed, and mistreated. The world didn’t deserve them. They wandered around in deserts, mountains, caves, and holes in the ground. All these people didn’t receive what was promised, though they were given approval for their faith. God provided something better for us so they wouldn’t be made perfect without us. So then, with endurance, let’s also run the race that is laid out in front of us, since we have such a great cloud of witnesses surrounding us. Let’s throw off any extra baggage, get rid of the sin that trips us up, and fix our eyes on Jesus, faith’s pioneer and perfecter. He endured the cross, ignoring the shame, for the sake of the joy that was laid out in front of him, and sat down at the right side of God’s throne. The story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! Response Song “Glorious Ruins” When the mountains fall and the tempest roars, you are with me When creation folds, still my soul will soar on your mercy I’ll walk through the fire with my head lifted high And my spirit revived in your story And I’ll look to the cross as my failure is lost In the light of your glorious grace So let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing When the world caves in, still my soul will cling to your promise When my courage ends, let my heart find strength in your presence I’ll walk through the fire with my head lifted high And my spirit revived in your story And I’ll look to the cross as my failure is lost In the light of your glorious grace So let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing Let the ruins come to life, in the beauty of your name Rising up from the ashes, God forever you reign And my soul will find refuge in the shadow of your wings I will love you forever, and forever I’ll sing Commitment Hymn: “Joy in the Morning” TFWS#2284 all vs. There'll be joy in the morning on that day, there'll be joy in the morning on that day, for the daylight will dawn when the darkness is gone, there'll be joy in the morning on that day. There'll be peace and contentment evermore, there'll be peace and contentment evermore, every heart, every voice on that day will rejoice, there'll be peace and contentment evermore. There'll be love and forgiveness everywhere, there'll be love and forgiveness everywhere, and the way of the Lord will that day be restored, there'll be love and forgiveness everywhere. Sending Forth/Unison Benediction One: May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Amen. Many: May the peace of the Lord go with us, wherever God may send us. May we embody the love, grace, and mercy of Christ to those we meet along the way. Amen.
