Holy God of ancient glory, choosing man and woman too; Abram's faith and Sarah's story formed a people bound to you. Alleluia, Alleluia, to your covenant keep us true. Covenant, new again in Jesus, Starchild born to set us free; Sent to heal us, sent to teach us how love's children we might be. Alleluia, Alleluia, risen Christ, our Savior he! Responsive Reading: Psalm 33:12-22 (NRSV) One: Happy is the nation whose God is the Lord, the people whom God has chosen as God’s heritage. Many: The Lord looks down from heaven; God sees all humankind. One: From where God sits enthroned God watches all the inhabitants of the earth-- Many: God, who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. One: A king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. Many: The war horse is a vain hope for victory, and by its great might it cannot save. One: Truly the eye of the Lord is on those who fear God, on those who hope in God’s steadfast love, Many: to deliver their soul from death and to keep them alive in famine. One: Our soul waits for the Lord; God is our help and shield. Many: Our heart is glad in the Lord; because we trust in God’s holy name. One: Let your steadfast love, O Lord, be upon us, even as we hope in you. Unison Invocation God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, Amen. Today's Scripture Readings One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Grant to us, Lord, we pray, the spirit to think and do always those things that are right, that we, who cannot exist without you, may by you be enabled to live according to your will; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading: Genesis 15:1-6 (NRSV) After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, “Do not be afraid, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “You have given me no offspring, so a slave born in my house is to be my heir.” But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.” He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.” And he believed the Lord, and the Lord reckoned it to him as righteousness. One: God’s word for God’s people! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading: Luke 12:32-40 (NRSV) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! One: “Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father’s good pleasure to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give alms. Make purses for yourselves that do not wear out, an unfailing treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. “Be dressed for action and have your lamps lit; be like those who are waiting for their master to return from the wedding banquet, so that they may open the door for him as soon as he comes and knocks. Blessed are those slaves whom the master finds alert when he comes; truly I tell you, he will fasten his belt and have them sit down to eat, and he will come and serve them. If he comes during the middle of the night or near dawn and finds them so, blessed are those slaves. “But know this: if the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief was coming, he would not have let his house be broken into. You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Praise Hymn: “Your Grace is Enough” Music Team Great is your faithfulness, oh God You wrestle with the sinner’s heart You lead us by still waters into mercy And nothing can keep us apart So remember your people Remember your children Remember your promise, oh God Your grace is enough Your gracie is enough Your grace is enough for me Great is your love and justice, God You use the weak to lead the strong You lead us in the song of your salvation And all your people sing along So remember your people Remember your children Remember your promise, oh God Your grace is enough Your grace is enough Your grace is enough for me Prayers of the People One: Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplication to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfill now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. For Christ is risen. Many: Christ is risen, indeed! One: Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear our prayer.”) One: Grant, Almighty God, that all who confess your Name may be united in your truth, live together in your love, and reveal your glory in the world. Guide the people of this land, and of all the nations, in the ways of justice and peace; that we may honor one another and serve the common good. Give us all a reverence for the earth as your own creation, that we may use its resources rightly in the service of others and to your honor and glory. Bless all whose lives are closely linked with ours, and grant that we may serve Christ in them, and love one another as Christ loves us. Comfort and heal all those who suffer in body, mind, or spirit; give them courage and hope in their troubles, and bring them the joy of your salvation. We commend to your mercy all who have died, that your will for them may be fulfilled; and we pray that we may share with all your saints in your eternal kingdom. And now, because we often fail to love, because we acknowledge that we are sinners living in sinful systems, and because we acknowledge that we are all in need of God’s mercy and grace, let us confess our sins. Many: God of the living and the dead, We confess that we have sinned against you by what we have done and by what we have not done, We remember our broken promises and missed opportunities; The gifts we have taken for granted; The love we have not shown or returned; Forgive us, comfort and heal us, lift our guilt from us, That we may walk in freedom and grace to the glory of your name. Take joy my King In what You hear Let it be a sweet, sweet sound In Your ear Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Hebrews 11:1-3,8-16 (CEB) Praise Song “Let Our Faith Be Not Alone” Music Team Oh God, you are a mystery We crowd the streets in hopes to see The Son of Man before our eyes His holiness uncompromised Oh God, we have a history The saints who told of Calvary And the martyrs who laid down their lives For the cause of Christ we’re sacrificed Let our faith be not alone (let our faith be not alone) May our hearts be not of stone (may our hearts be not of stone) Give us souls that never close (give us souls that never close) To the grace that you bestow (to the grace that you bestow) May our eyes be quick to see (may our eyes be quick to see) That you are here, you’ve come to rescue me You are here, you’ve come to rescue me Communion Service One: The Lord be with you! Many: And also with you! One: Lift up your hearts! Many: We lift them up to the Lord! One: Let us give thanks! Many: It is just and right to give thanks. Apostles’ Creed One: It is just and right and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give our thanks and praise to God. Now, let us join together in confessing our faith through the words of the Apostles’ Creed: Many: We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer over the Bread and Cup One: We give thanks to you, O God, for the goodness and love which you have made known to us in creation; in the calling of Israel to be your people; in your Story spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus, your Son. For in these last days you sent him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Savior and Redeemer of the world, who by your Spirit was anointed to preach good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, set at liberty those who are oppressed. Christ healed the sick, fed the hungry, ate with sinners, and established the new covenant for forgiveness of sins. We live in the hope of His coming again. (Lift the bread, break it) We remember that on the night that our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and he gave it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you. Take and eat - all of you - in remembrance of me.” (Lift the cup) Likewise, after the supper, he took the cup, and after giving thanks, he said, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.” And so, Lord God, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to you in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with the sacrifice of Christ for us, as we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Many: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. One: Hear us most merciful Father, we know you create and intend all things to be means of communion with you, so sanctify these gifts, send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this cup, that, overshadowed by His life-giving power, they may become for us the Body and Blood of your son, Jesus the Messiah, and we may be unified, healed, forgiven, filled with your grace, kindled with the fire of your love, and renewed for the service of your kingdom. Make yourself known in this supper and through us, that we may be for the world the Body of Christ, redeemed by His blood until Christ comes in final victory. All this we pray through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ; all praise, honor, and glory, are yours now and forever, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God. And all the people said: Many: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer One: Because we all partake of the one bread and the one cup, we, though we are many, are one. So let us join in together in praying the prayer that the Lord taught all of the disciples to pray. Let us be so bold as to say: Many: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial, And deliver us from evil. For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Giving the Bread and the Cup One: (Give instructions for coming forward to receive) The Table is prepared. All who are hungry and thirsty are invited to come forward to receive these gifts of grace. May Christ be fully formed in you. Come forward as you’re ready. Commitment Song: “Faith, While Trees Are Still in Blossom” UMH#508 vs. 1,3,5 Faith while trees are still in blossom, plans that picking if the fruit; faith can feel the thrill of harvest, when the buds begin to sprout. Long before the rains were coming, Noah went and built an ark. Abraham, the lonely migrant, saw the Light beyond the dark. Faith, believes that God is faithful, He will be who He will be. Faith accepts His call responding: "I am willing; Lord, Send me." Sending Forth One: God of love, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious body and blood of our savior Jesus the Messiah; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Christ. May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Amen. Many: May the peace of the Lord go with us, wherever God may send us. May we embody the love, grace, and mercy of Christ to those we meet along the way. Amen. Prelude Thank you for worshiping with us today! (CCLI License #1552544)
