Please spread the word that our worship service on Sunday, April 30th is at Fruitland UMC at 9:30 a.m. We sure don’t anyone showing up at our church Sunday at 11:00. Let’s show up in Fruitland and fill their sanctuary like they filled ours on January 29th. The Trustees met on April 17th and decided to do the spring cleanup the same as fall cleanup. Separate lists for outdoor and indoor tasks are on clipboards that will be available for a few weeks. If you want to help out, sign up for a task and complete it when it is convenient for you. The church is open T-F from 9 to noon every week or if you would like to come at a different time, just let me know and I’ll arrange for it to be open for you. Please bring your own tools and cleaning supplies. We all appreciate your help! Episode 2 of the third season of The Chosen will be shown this Sunday evening at 6:00. The UMM will provide popcorn and soda. The series is amazing, the snacks delicious and you can’t beat the company! Monday Morning Coffee With the Pastor returns to Agape on Monday from 9-12. Stop in and have a free coffee with Pastor Mary Beth on May Day! We received word that Hugh Homan was released from the hospital and is in skilled nursing care in Payette. That is an answer to prayer to keep him close to Doris and Jana. We are so glad he’s on the mend and getting stronger. I made a mistake in the newsletter last week about a former preschool student of Sheri Hood. Brendan Loudermilk passed away after a battle with cancer. Let’s keep his family in our prayers. She was born weighing 2lbs. 5 oz. Emily was able to go home but the baby will stay probably until close to her due date. The baby is doing well considering her size. Please keep baby, mom and dad on your prayer list! I will give you the baby’s name when I know. Remember, Glenora’s great granddaughter Eleanor weighed less than two pounds at birth and she is just fine, actually perfect! Continue to pray for Mike Hall’s family as they lost a brother and have a brother with mesothelioma. Ron’s brother Jim had a scan and some more troubling spots were found. Keep Ron and his siblings in your prayers. I got this word from Pam Hardenbrook’s Facebook page: Jim’s father is getting ready to take his final journey. He will soon hear those precious words, “Well done, my good and faithful servant.” Keep Jim, Pam and all of their family in your prayers. Continue to pray for Floyd’s brother Frank, the Williamsons, Irene Jeffries, Shannon Osborn, James’ mom Mary, and Terry Hershey. Since we aren’t having a worship service this week, I won’t come in to work on Friday. I’ll take a 4-day weekend. I will be in town so if something comes up, give me a call and I’ll meet you here. I hope you can get out and enjoy this beautiful spring weather (finally). Keep in mind that all the beauty was created for us by God. Be thankful. We are currently in the Season after Epiphany, which lasts for several weeks between the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th) and Ash Wednesday. This season is somewhat similar to Ordinary Time (when we celebrate God as God of the simple, ordinary, and mundane), but it is also a distinct season in which we continually celebrate that Christ is for ALL people. The colors for this season are green and gold. Hi Everyone! February 9, 2023

Happy February to you all! January has always seemed like a long month to me so the shortest of all months is welcome! Along with that, February seems to always have a few very nice days and I look forward to that. If we didn’t have winter, we wouldn’t appreciate spring so much. Today is Pastor Mary Beth’s birthday! We celebrated her birthday as a church last Sunday along with the Fruitland UMC’s congregation and Pastor Clynton. We had a great turnout and a nice meal afterward with birthday cake for dessert. It was nice to have the pews full and great to see our neighbors. Pastor Mary Beth asked me to share this message with you. THANK YOU to everyone for the cake, the cards, and the blessing on Sunday. James and I truly love our church! As you know, the idea of changing our service time was brought up to the Ad Board last month. The Ad Board decided that we should take this idea to the congregation. The first survey has been completed. It showed that more people voted to change our worship time. A new survey is out to vote on either 10:00 or 10:30 as a starting time. Please take a minute on Sunday to fill out a survey. The survey will be available until the next Ad Board meeting on Monday, February 20th. Please just vote once! There will be no Monday morning coffee with the pastor on this Monday, February 6th. Coffee will resume the following Monday. We will be having an Ash Wednesday service this year on Wednesday, February 22nd at 6:30 p.m. We will be holding a neighborhood Easter egg hunt this year on Saturday, April 1st. No foolin’ 😊 Lots more details will follow but we will be collecting Easter candy now. Please bring wrapped candy small enough to fit in a plastic Easter egg but no chocolate please (it melts.) If you are interested in joining a book study with Pastor Mary Beth, please sign up on the sheet in the fellowship hall. A day and time will be determined by the participants. The United Methodist Men will be hosting a Valentine’s Dinner on Friday, February 10th from 5-7 here at PUMC. The menu will be Tri Tip, salad, beans, bread and dessert. The price will be $15 for one and $25 for a couple. That’s a great price for a tri tip dinner! Please plan to attend. You won’t be sorry. The Payette High School Band is presenting a Potato Bar and Jazz Concert on Saturday, February 18th from 5-8 p.m. at the R&L Center in Payette. Showtimes are at 5:30 and 7:00. Tickets are $10 or $40 for five people. The band is raising money for their trip to Disneyland. If you’d like to buy tickets, please contact Kathryn or Laura Tompkins. I can contact them for you if you’d like, just give me a call. Let’s help Kathryn get to Disneyland!!!! I have been asked to pass along the news that there will be a used book sale fundraiser this Saturday at the Portia Club in Payette from 11-2. All proceeds will go to Four Rivers Healthy Community for Dolly Parton’s Imagine Library. Imagine Library gives a free book every month to children age birth to five years old. What a benefit for our kids! Each child who attends the book sale will receive a free book! We have some prayer requests this week. Last Sunday night, Jeanie Sandquist had a TIA. That’s a transient ischemic attack. It means that the blood flow to part of her brain was blocked for a short time. It caused the same symptoms as a stroke but didn’t cause any lasting damage. She will be on medication and will be watched so that she doesn’t have a stroke in the future. She is home now. Let’s pray for Jeanie, her doctors and for John. James Boesch’s mom Mary had a fall and dislocated her elbow. She had surgery to repair it but she is in a lot of pain. Please keep Mary in your prayers. Mike Hall’s brother Jerry is in Kentucky and has been in the hospital with fluid on his lungs. Gloria, who runs the Community Closet at PUMC had surgery that turned out to be more extensive than they predicted. I asked what we can do for her and Gloria’s reply was, “Please pray for me!” We can do that! Brandon Baumler traveled to Fargo, North Dakota in below zero temperatures to attend his Uncle Scott’s funeral. He asks that you pray for his cousins. He is on his way to Arizona (much better weather) to visit his grandfather. He asks for travel mercies. In church on Sunday, Don Essinger asked us to pray for Letha. She hasn’t been feeling great. Sunday December 25, 2022 Welcome/Announcements Sing together: Joy to the World Sing together: I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day Call to worship One: Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people! All: Our savior is born in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord! One: The Word became flesh, and made his home among us! All: We have seen his glory, full of grace and truth! One: Come! Let us worship Emmanuel, God is with us! All: Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth, peace. Service of the Scriptures One: Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Many: Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. One: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to John [1:1-14] Many: Glory to You, Lord Christ! In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word was with God in the beginning. Everything came into being through the Word, and without the Word nothing came into being. What came into being through the Word was life, and the life was the light for all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness doesn’t extinguish the light. A man named John was sent from God. He came as a witness to testify concerning the light, so that through him everyone would believe in the light. He himself wasn’t the light, but his mission was to testify concerning the light. The true light that shines on all people was coming into the world. The light was in the world, and the world came into being through the light, but the world didn’t recognize the light. The light came to his own people, and his own people didn’t welcome him. But those who did welcome him, those who believed in his name, he authorized to become God’s children, born not from blood nor from human desire or passion, but born from God. The Word became flesh and made his home among us. We have seen his glory, glory like that of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth. One: This is the Gospel of the Lord! Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Communion One: The Lord be with you! Many: And also with you! One: Lift up your hearts! Many: We lift them up to the Lord! One: Let us give thanks! Many: It is just and right to give thanks! It is just and right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give our thanks and praise to almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. So let us pray: God, you spoke and your Word became flesh, breathing a new song of joy and praise into the world. Grant that we may bear the good news of your salvation, proclaiming your promise of peace to the ends of the earth. As your Word became flesh, born of woman, on that night long ago, so we remember that on the night that our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, he took bread and after giving thanks, he broke it, and he gave it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup and after giving thanks said, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins. Do this in remembrance of me.” And so, we gather as the Body of Christ to offer ourselves to you in praise and thanksgiving as we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again! Because we all partake of the one bread and the one cup, we, though we are many, are one… no matter what divides us. So let us join together and pray the prayer the Lord taught all his disciples to pray. Let us be so bold as to say: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. Save us from the time of trial, and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us and on these your gifts. Make them by the power of your Spirit to be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the Body of Christ, redeemed by His blood. By your Spirit make us one in Christ, one with each other, and one in the ministry of Christ to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. And all God’s People said, Amen. Then invite with the words: The Table is prepared; all who are hungry and thirsty are invited to receive these gifts of grace; may Christ be fully formed in you. (After everyone has received): One: God of love, the risen Christ has been made known to us in the breaking of the bread; help us now grow in love for you and for each other; Thank you for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Christ. Sing together: Go Tell it on the Mountain Sending Forth/Benediction May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Many: And now, God, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Christ, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. After service, everyone is invited to stay for a “Hymn Sing” of Christmas Carols. Christmas Eve Candle Nativity

Welcome/Explanation of Candle Nativity Opening Prayer (in unison) O God, you have caused this holy night to shine with the brightness of the true Light: Grant that we, who have known the mystery of that Light on earth, may also enjoy Christ perfectly in heaven; where with you and the Holy Spirit, Christ lives and reigns, one God, in glory everlasting. Amen. Sing together - Gloria Patri (UMH #70) Service of the Scriptures - Candle lighting liturgy Let us pray: Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that, as the Scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Almighty God, you have given your only-begotten Son to take our nature upon him, and to be born of a pure virgin: Grant that we, who have been born again and made your children by adoption and grace, may daily be renewed by your Holy Spirit; through our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom with you and the same Spirit be honor and glory, now and for ever. And all the people said: Amen. A reading from Isaiah [9:2-7]: The people walking in darkness have seen a great light. On those living in a pitch-dark land, light has dawned. You have made the nation great; you have increased its joy. They rejoiced before you as with joy at the harvest, as those who divide plunder rejoice. As on the day of Midian, you’ve shattered the yoke that burdened them, the staff on their shoulders, and the rod of their oppressor. Because every boot of the thundering warriors, and every garment rolled in blood will be burned, fuel for the fire. A child is born to us, a son is given to us, and authority will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. There will be vast authority and endless peace for David’s throne and for his kingdom, establishing and sustaining it with justice and righteousness now and forever. The zeal of the Lord of heavenly forces will do this. One: This is the story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! One: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Luke [1:26-38; 2:1-20] Many: Glory to You, Lord Christ! The Birth of Jesus foretold When Elizabeth was six months pregnant, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a city in Galilee, to a virgin who was engaged to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David’s house. The virgin’s name was Mary. When the angel came to her, he said, “Rejoice, favored one! The Lord is with you!” She was confused by these words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid, Mary. God is honoring you. Look! You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you will name him Jesus. He will be great and he will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of David his father. He will rule over Jacob’s house forever, and there will be no end to his kingdom.” Then Mary said to the angel, “How will this happen since I haven’t had sexual relations with a man?” The angel replied, “The Holy Spirit will come over you and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. Therefore, the one who is to be born will be holy. He will be called God’s Son. Look, even in her old age, your relative Elizabeth has conceived a son. This woman who was labeled ‘unable to conceive’ is now six months pregnant. Nothing is impossible for God.” Then Mary said, “I am the Lord’s servant. Let it be with me just as you have said.” Then the angel left her. Sing together: Gabriel’s Message As we sing, the candle representing Mary is lit by one of the Trinity candles Jesus’ Birth In those days Caesar Augustus declared that everyone throughout the empire should be enrolled in the tax lists. This first enrollment occurred when Quirinius governed Syria. Everyone went to their own cities to be enrolled. Since Joseph belonged to David’s house and family line, he went up from the city of Nazareth in Galilee to David’s city, called Bethlehem, in Judea. He went to be enrolled together with Mary, who was promised to him in marriage and who was pregnant. While they were there, the time came for Mary to have her baby. She gave birth to her firstborn child, a son, wrapped him snugly, and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the guestroom. Sing together: Away in a Manger (UMH #217 all verses) As we sing, the candles representing the Empire, Joseph, and Jesus are lit Announcement to Shepherds Nearby shepherds were living in the fields, guarding their sheep at night. The Lord’s angel stood before them, the Lord’s glory shone around them, and they were terrified. The angel said, “Don’t be afraid! Look! I bring good news to you—wonderful, joyous news for all people. Your savior is born today in David’s city. He is Christ the Lord. This is a sign for you: you will find a newborn baby wrapped snugly and lying in a manger.” Suddenly a great assembly of the heavenly forces was with the angel praising God. They said, “Glory to God in heaven, and on earth peace among those whom he favors.” When the angels returned to heaven, the shepherds said to each other, “Let’s go right now to Bethlehem and see what’s happened. Let’s confirm what the Lord has revealed to us.” They went quickly and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the manger. When they saw this, they reported what they had been told about this child. Everyone who heard it was amazed at what the shepherds told them. Mary committed these things to memory and considered them carefully. The shepherds returned home, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen. Everything happened just as they had been told. One: This is the Gospel of the Lord! Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Sing together: The First Noel (UMH #245 v. 1-2) As we sing, the candles representing the messengers and shepherds are lit Homily Children’s Time - Charlene Wimpy Prayer for Christmas Eve Offering (Special donation for Origins Ministry to the homeless) Sing together: Doxology (UMH #94) Sing together: O Holy Night Communion One: The Lord be with you! Many: And also with you! One: Lift up your hearts! Many: We lift them up to the Lord! One: Let us give thanks. Many: It is just and right to give thanks. One: It is just and right and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give our thanks and praise to almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. So let us pray: God of love, You created light from nothingness and brought forth life on the earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets. In the fullness of time you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to be our Savior, and at his birth the angels sang glory to you in the highest and peace to your people on earth. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. As Mary and Joseph went from Galilee to Bethlehem and there found no room, so Jesus went from Galilee to Jerusalem and was despised and rejected. As in the poverty of a stable Jesus was born, so by the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. As your Word became flesh, born of woman, on that night long ago, so, we remember that on the night that our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed…he took bread and after giving thanks, he broke it, and he gave it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you.” Likewise, after supper, he took the cup and after giving thanks said, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood which is poured out for the forgiveness of sins. One: The Table is prepared; all who are hungry and thirsty are invited to receive these gifts of grace; may Christ be fully formed in you. One: God of love, the risen Christ has been made known to us in the breaking of the bread; help us now grow in love for you and for each other; Thank you for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of Christ. Lighting of the Congregation Candles (The children come forward to receive their lights first, then the children take the light to the rest of the congregation) Sing together: Silent Night (UMH #239 all verses) Sending Forth/Benediction One: May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Many: And now, God, send us out to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To Christ, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and for ever. Amen. |
