September 4, 2022 – 11:00 AM Welcome and Announcements Gathering Hymn: “Family of God” I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God I’ve been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, For I’m part of the family, the family of God. Calling Song: “Thou Art Worthy” TFWS# 2041 2x Thou art worthy, Thou art worthy, Thou art worthy, O Lord, To receive glory, Glory and honor, Glory and honor and pow'r For Thou hast created, hast all things created, Thou hast created all things; And for Thy pleasure they are created - Thou art worthy, O Lord. Responsive Reading: Psalm 139:1-6, 13-18 (CEB) – Cris Warzyn One: Lord, you have examined me. You know me. Many: You know when I sit down and when I stand up. Even from far away, you comprehend my plans. One: You study my traveling and resting. You are thoroughly familiar with all my ways. Many: There isn’t a word on my tongue, Lord, that you don’t already know completely. One: You surround me—front and back. You put your hand on me. Many: That kind of knowledge is too much for me; it’s so high above me that I can’t reach it. One: You are the one who created my innermost parts; you knit me together while I was still in my mother’s womb. Many: I give thanks to you that I was marvelously set apart. Your works are wonderful—I know that very well. One: My bones weren’t hidden from you when I was being put together in a secret place, when I was being woven together in the deep parts of the earth. Many: Your eyes saw my embryo, and on your scroll every day was written that was being formed for me, before any one of them had yet happened. One: God, your plans are incomprehensible to me! Their total number is countless! Many: If I tried to count them—they outnumber grains of sand! If I came to the very end—I’d still be with you. Unison Invocation – Cris Warzyn God of love, to whom our hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hidden; cleanse our hearts by the power of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name; through Christ our Lord, amen. Hymn: “Gloria Patri” UMH#70 Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Amen. Scripture Readings - Cris Warzyn One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Grant us, O Lord, to trust in you with all our hearts; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. And all the people said: Many: Amen. Old Testament Reading p.720, Jeremiah 18:1-11 (CEB) Jeremiah received the Lord’s word: Go down to the potter’s house, and I’ll give you instructions about what to do there. So I went down to the potter’s house; he was working on the potter’s wheel. But the piece he was making was flawed while still in his hands, so the potter started on another, as seemed best to him. Then the Lord’s word came to me: House of Israel, can’t I deal with you like this potter, declares the Lord? Like clay in the potter’s hand, so are you in mine, house of Israel! At any time I may announce that I will dig up, pull down, and destroy a nation or kingdom; but if that nation I warned turns from its evil, then I’ll relent and not carry out the harm I intended for it. At the same time, I may announce that I will build and plant a nation or kingdom; but if that nation displeases and disobeys me, then I’ll relent and not carry out the good I intended for it. Now say to the people of Judah and those living in Jerusalem: This is what the Lord says: I am a potter preparing a disaster for you; I’m working out a plan against you. So each one of you, turn from your evil ways; reform your ways and your actions. One: The story of God for the people of God! Many: Thanks be to God! New Testament Reading p.78, Luke 14:25-33 (CEB) One: This is the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke. Many: Glory to you, Lord Christ! Large crowds were traveling with Jesus. Turning to them, he said, “Whoever comes to me and doesn’t hate father and mother, spouse and children, and brothers and sisters—yes, even one’s own life—cannot be my disciple. Whoever doesn’t carry their own cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. “If one of you wanted to build a tower, wouldn’t you first sit down and calculate the cost, to determine whether you have enough money to complete it? Otherwise, when you have laid the foundation but couldn’t finish the tower, all who see it will begin to belittle you. They will say, ‘Here’s the person who began construction and couldn’t complete it!’ Or what king would go to war against another king without first sitting down to consider whether his ten thousand soldiers could go up against the twenty thousand coming against him? And if he didn’t think he could win, he would send a representative to discuss terms of peace while his enemy was still a long way off. In the same way, none of you who are unwilling to give up all of your possessions can be my disciple. One: This is the Gospel of our Lord. Many: Praise to you, Lord Christ! Shape us into holy vessels, bearing the mark of your wise crafting, that we may remain strong and useful through years of faithful and obedient service in Christ's name. God of salvation, who sent your Son to seek out and save what is lost, hear our prayers on behalf of those who are lost in our day, receiving these petitions and thanksgivings with your unending compassion. Are there any requests? (The congregation is invited to speak their requests. After each request is spoken, we all respond in unison, “Lord, hear us.”) Redeeming Sustainer, visit your people and pour out your strength and courage upon us, that we may hurry to make you welcome not only in our concern for others, but by serving them generously and faithfully in your name. Amen. And now, because we often fail to love, because we acknowledge that we are sinners living in sinful systems, and because we acknowledge that we are all in need of God’s mercy and grace, let us confess our sins. Many: God of the living and the dead, We confess that we have sinned against you by what we have done and by what we have not done, We remember our broken promises and missed opportunities; The gifts we have taken for granted; The love we have not shown or returned; Forgive us, comfort and heal us, lift our guilt from us, That we may walk in freedom and grace to the glory of your name. Amen. One: May God who is both power and love forgive us and free us from our sins; heal and strength us by the power of the Holy Spirit; and bring us to new life through Christ our Lord. Spirit of the Living God Fall afresh on me. Melt me, mold me fill me, use me Spirit of the Living God Fall afresh on me Message: Pastor Mary Beth Boesch Revelation 1:9-20 (CEB) I, John, your brother who shares with you in the hardship, kingdom, and endurance that we have in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because of the word of God and my witness about Jesus. I was in a Spirit-inspired trance on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice that sounded like a trumpet. It said, “Write down on a scroll whatever you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.” I turned to see who was speaking to me, and when I turned, I saw seven oil lamps burning on top of seven gold stands. In the middle of the lampstands I saw someone who looked like the Human One. He wore a robe that stretched down to his feet, and he had a gold sash around his chest. His head and hair were white as white wool—like snow—and his eyes were like a fiery flame. His feet were like fine brass that has been purified in a furnace, and his voice sounded like rushing water. He held seven stars in his right hand, and from his mouth came a sharp, two-edged sword. His appearance was like the sun shining with all its power. When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. But he put his right hand on me and said, “Don’t be afraid. I’m the first and the last, and the living one. I was dead, but look! Now I’m alive forever and always. I have the keys of Death and the Grave. So write down what you have seen, both the scene now before you and the things that are about to unfold after this. As for the mystery of the seven stars that you saw in my right hand and the seven gold lampstands, here is what they mean: the seven stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the seven churches. The story of God for the people of God. Many: Thanks be to God! Response Song “God, Help Me to Be” Music Team God, help me to be closer to You, Lord, so I am farther from me And may Your kingdom be the only one that I seek, oh God And God, help me to see that everything was good when You created all things Now let me see with those same eyes that created me, oh God God, help me believe when everything around me points to uncertainty Remind me of the hope of You that's living in me, oh God And God, help me to shine like stars up in the universe that's Yours and not mine And fill me with Your light so that the darkness will hide, oh God Hallelujah, Amen God, help me to give everything to You that I'm unable to give And make my life the life I've been created to live, oh God And God, help me to go, and follow where You lead me so all nations will know the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of this world, oh God, my God Communion Service One: The Lord be with you! Many: And also with you! One: Lift up your hearts! Many: We lift them up to the Lord! One: Let us give thanks! Many: It is just and right to give thanks. Apostles’ Creed One: It is just and right and a good and joyful thing always and everywhere to give our thanks and praise to God. Now, let us join together in confessing our faith through the words of the Apostles’ Creed: Many: We believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayer over the Bread and Cup One: Source of life and blessing, of garden, orchard, and field, root us in obedience to you and nourish us by your ever-flowing Spirit, that, perceiving only the good we might do, our lives may be fruitful and our service good, in communion with Christ, who by your Spirit was anointed to preach good news to the poor, proclaim release to the captives, set at liberty those who are oppressed. Christ healed the sick, fed the hungry, ate with sinners, and established the new covenant for forgiveness of sins. We live in the hope of His coming again. (Lift the bread, break it) We remember that on the night that our Lord Jesus Christ was betrayed, he took bread, and after giving thanks he broke it and he gave it to his disciples and said, “This is my body, given for you. Take and eat - all of you - in remembrance of me.” (Lift the cup) Likewise, after the supper, he took the cup, and after giving thanks, he said, “This is the cup of the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for the forgiveness of sin. Do this in remembrance of me.” And so, Lord God, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in our Lord Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves to you in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with the sacrifice of Christ for us, as we proclaim the mystery of our faith: Many: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. One: Hear us most merciful Father, we know you create and intend all things to be means of communion with you, so sanctify these gifts, send your Holy Spirit upon us and upon this bread and this cup, that, overshadowed by His life-giving power, they may become for us the Body and Blood of your son, Jesus the Messiah, and we may be unified, healed, forgiven, filled with your grace, kindled with the fire of your love, and renewed for the service of your kingdom. Make yourself known in this supper and through us, that we may be for the world the Body of Christ, redeemed by His blood until Christ comes in final victory. All this we pray through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ; all praise, honor, and glory, are yours now and forever, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, one God. And all the people said: Many: Amen. The Lord’s Prayer One: Because we all partake of the one bread and the one cup, we, though we are many, are one. So let us join in together in praying the prayer that the Lord taught all of the disciples to pray. Let us be so bold as to say: Many: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name, Your Kingdom come, Your will be done, On earth as it is in heaven. Give us today our daily bread, Forgive our debts as we forgive our debtors, Save us from the time of trial, And deliver us from evil. For the Kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. Giving the Bread and the Cup One: (Give instructions for coming forward to receive) The Table is prepared. All who are hungry and thirsty are invited to come forward to receive these gifts of grace. May Christ be fully formed in you. Come forward as you’re ready. Commitment Hymn: “Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise” UMH#103 vs. 1,3,4 Immortal, invisible, God only wise, in light inaccessible hid from our eyes, most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days, almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise. To all, life thou givest, to both great and small; in all life thou livest, the true life of all; we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree, and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee. Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light; thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight; all laud we would render: O help us to see 'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee. Sending Forth/Unison Benediction One: May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore. Amen. Many: May the peace of the Lord go with us, wherever God may send us. May we embody the love, grace, and mercy of Christ to those we meet along the way. Amen. Prelude Thank you for worshiping with us today! (CCLI License #1552544)
