Welcome and Announcements

Gathering Hymn: “Family of God”

I’m so glad I’m a part of the family of God
I’ve been washed in the fountain,
cleansed by His blood!
Joint heirs with Jesus
as we travel this sod,
For I’m part of the family,
the family of God.

Calling Song: “Bind Us Together” TFWS#2226
Bind us together Lord
Bind us together
With cords that cannot be broken
Bind us Together Lord
Bind us together
Bind us together with love

There is only God
There is only one King
There is only one body
This is why we sing

Responsive Reading: Psalm 46 (CEB) - Leslie Olson

One: God is our refuge and strength, a help always near in times of great trouble.
Many: That’s why we won’t be afraid when the world falls apart, when the mountains crumble into the center of the sea,
One: when its waters roar and rage, when the mountains shake because of its surging waves. Selah!
Many: There is a river whose streams gladden God’s city, the holiest dwelling of the Most High.

One: God is in that city. It will never crumble. God will help it when morning dawns.
Many: Nations roar; kingdoms crumble. God speaks; the earth melts.

One: The Lord of heavenly forces is with us! The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah!
Many: Come, see the Lord’s deeds, what devastation God has imposed on the earth--
One: bringing wars to an end in every corner of the world, breaking the bow and shattering the spear, burning chariots with fire.
Many: “That’s enough! Now know that I am God! I am exalted among all nations; I am exalted throughout the world!”
One: The Lord of heavenly forces is with us!
Many: The God of Jacob is our place of safety. Selah!
One: This is our prayer.
Many: Lord, hear our prayer.

Opening Prayer (in unison) - Leslie Olson
We proclaim the greatness of the Lord, and our spirits rejoice in God our Savior! For you, Lord, have looked with favor on your lowly servants. You, the Almighty, have done great things for us and holy is your name. You have mercy on those who fear you from generation to generation. You have shown strength with your arm and scattered the proud in their conceit, casting down the mighty from their thrones and lifting up the lowly. You have filled the hungry with good things and sent the rich away empty. You have come to the aid of your people, to remember the promise of mercy, the promise made to our forebears, to Abraham and Sarah and their children for ever. Amen.

Hymn: “Gloria Patri" UMH#70

Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen. Amen.

Scripture Readings:
One: God, open our hearts and minds by the power of the Holy Spirit, that as the scriptures are read and your Word proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today.

Almighty and everlasting God, whose will it is to restore all things in your well-beloved Son, the King of kings and Lord of lords: Mercifully grant that the peoples of the earth, divided and enslaved by sin, may be freed and brought together under his most gracious rule; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. And all the people said:
Many: Amen.

Old Testament Reading: Jeremiah 23:1-6 (CEB)
Watch out, you shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture, declares the Lord. This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, proclaims about the shepherds who “tend to” my people: You are the ones who have scattered my flock and driven them away. You haven’t attended to their needs, so I will take revenge on you for the terrible things you have done to them, declares the Lord. I myself will gather the few remaining sheep from all the countries where I have driven them. I will bring them back to their pasture, and they will be fruitful and multiply. I will place over them shepherds who care for them. Then they will no longer be afraid or dread harm, nor will any be missing, declares the Lord.

The time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up a righteous descendant from David’s line, and he will rule as a wise king. He will do what is just and right in the land. During his lifetime, Judah will be saved and Israel will live in safety. And his name will be The Lord Is Our Righteousness.

One: The story of God for the people of God!
Many: Thanks be to God!

New Testament Reading: Colossians 1:11-20 (CEB)
by being strengthened through his glorious might so that you endure everything and have patience; and by giving thanks with joy to the Father. He made it so you could take part in the inheritance, in light granted to God’s holy people. He rescued us from the control of darkness and transferred us into the kingdom of the Son he loves. He set us free through the Son and forgave our sins.

The Son is the image of the invisible God,
the one who is first over all creation,

Because all things were created by him:
both in the heavens and on the earth,
the things that are visible and the things that are invisible.
Whether they are thrones or powers,
            or rulers or authorities,
all things were created through him and for him.

He existed before all things,
and all things are held together in him.

He is the head of the body, the church,
who is the beginning,
the one who is firstborn from among the dead
so that he might occupy the first place in everything.

Because all the fullness of God was pleased to live in him,
and he reconciled all things to himself through him--
whether things on earth or in the heavens.
He brought peace through the blood of his cross.

One: The story of God for the people of God.
Many: Thanks be to God!

Advent Candle Lighting - Leslie Olson
One: As we light this third Advent candle, we remember that the desire of Christ is to see all peoples, tribes, and nations united in one identity: the Beloved children of God. As we light this candle, our prayer is that we may share in this desire to see all divisions cease, and to recognize the inherent belovedness of all our neighbors. And all the people said:
Many: Amen.

Sing Together: ”O Come, O Come Emmanuel”
O come, Desire of nations, bind
All peoples in one heart and mind;
Bid Thou our sad divisions cease,
And by Thyself our King of Peace.
Rejoice, rejoice, Emmanuel
Shall come to thee O Israel

Children’s Time - Cris Warzyn

Ancient eternal Light—hear our prayer.

Come, O Redeemer, come;
grant us mercy.
Come, O Redeemer, come;
grant us peace.

faithless, troubled hearts weighed down.

Look now upon our need; Lord, be with us.
Heal us and make us free from our sin.

Commitment Hymn: “They’ll Know We Are Christians” TFWS#2223 all vs.
We are one in the Spirit,
We are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit,
We are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity
Will one day be restored:

Refrain:

And they’ll know we are Christians
By our love, by our love;
Yes, they’ll know we are Christians
By our love.

We will walk with each other,
We will walk hand in hand,
We will walk with each other,
We will walk hand in hand,
And together we’ll spread the news
That God is in our land:
Refrain

We will work with each other,
We will work side by side,
We will work with each other,
We will work side by side,
And we’ll guard human dignity
And save human pride:
Refrain

All praise to the Father, from
Whom all things come,
And all praise to Christ Jesus,
God’s only Son,
And all praise to the Spirit,
Who makes us one:

Sending Forth/Unison Benediction

May God bless you and keep you; may God’s face shine upon you and be gracious unto you; may God’s countenance be lifted upon you and give you peace, from this day forth and forevermore.
Many: May the peace of the Lord go with us, wherever God may send us. May we embody the love, grace, and mercy of Christ to those we meet along the way. Amen
