O Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify your name: Prince of Peace, mighty God; O Lord God Almighty. Responsive Reading from Psalm 8 Leader: Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens. People: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars, which you have put in place, what are mere mortals that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You made them rulers over the works of your hands; People: You put everything under their feet: flocks and herds, the animals of the wild, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. All: Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! Unison Invocation Heavenly Father please remind us this morning of your majesty, the creation, and your amazing grace. Prayer is the burden of a sigh, the falling of a tear, the upward glancing of an eye, when none but God is near. O Thou, by whom we come to God, the Life, the Truth, the Way: the path of prayer thyself hast trod; Lord, teach us how to pray! Message “Teach Us To Pray” Luke 11:1-4 Hymn “ The Lord’s Prayer” Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. These are the ones we should serve, these are the ones we should love; all these neighbors to us and you. The Communion Service The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen. Prayer of Confession and Pardon Gracious God, our sins are too heavy to carry, too real to hide, and too deep to undo. Forgive what our lips tremble to name, and what our hearts can no longer bear. Through the cross, set us free from a past that we cannot change. Through the resurrection, open to us a future in which we can be changed. Grant us grace to grow more and more in your likeness and image, through Jesus Christ, the light of the world. Amen. Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Bread and Cup The Lord be with you And also with you. Let us give thanks using the words Jesus gave us: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be they name. Thy kingdom come, they will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. AMEN. Commitment Hymn: “Sent Forth by God’s Blessing” UMH #664 vs. 1 Sent forth by God’s blessing, our true faith confessing, the people of God from this dwelling take leave. The supper is ended. Oh, now be extended the fruits of this service in all who believe. The seed of Christ’s teaching, receptive souls reaching, shall blossom in action for God and for all. Your grace shall incite us, your love shall unite us to work for your kingdom and answer your call. Unison Benediction* May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. But we acknowledge that in the midst of remembering our dead we need to remember You and Your glory. So please lift our souls as we lift our voices as we come to you in the name of Jesus. Amen. Hymn of Praise “My Life Flows On” (How Can I Keep From Singing) TFWS #2212 My life flows on in endless song, above earth’s lamentation. I hear the clear, though far-off hymn that hails a new creation. Refrain: No storm can shake my inmost calm while to that Rock I’m clinging. Since love is Lord of heaven and earth, how can I keep from singing? Through all the tumult and the strife, I hear that music ringing. It finds an echo in my soul. How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] What though my joys and comforts die? I know my Savior liveth. What though the darkness gather round? Songs in the night he giveth. [Refrain] The peace of Christ makes fresh my heart, a fountain ever springing! All things are mine since I am his! How can I keep from singing? [Refrain] Gospel Reading John 17: 20-26 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks Be To God Hymn of Hope “Hymn of Promise” UMH #707 In the bulb there is a flower; in the seed, an apple tree; in cocoons, a hidden promise: butterflies will soon be free! In the cold and snow of winter there's a spring that waits to be, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. There's a song in every silence, seeking word and melody; there's a dawn in every darkness bringing hope to you and me. From the past will come the future; what it holds, a mystery, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. In our end is our beginning; in our time, infinity; in our doubt there is believing; in our life, eternity. In our death, a resurrection; at the last, a victory, unrevealed until its season, something God alone can see. Offering & Doxology “Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow” UMH #95 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise him, all creatures here below; praise him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Young People’s Moment Prayers of the People Message “Remember These Things” 2 Peter 1:12-15 Commitment Hymn “Because He Lives” UMH #364 God sent His son, they called Him Jesus He came to love, heal, and forgive. He lived and died to buy my pardon, An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives. Refrain: Because He lives, I can face tomorrow. Because He lives, All fear is gone. Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living just because He lives. How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he gives. But greater still the calm assurance, This child can face uncertain days because He lives. (refrain) And then one day I'll cross the river, I'll fight life's final war with pain. And then as death gives way to victory, I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives. (refrain) Unison Benediction “God Be with You till We Meet Again” UMH #672 God be with you till we meet again; by his counsels guide, uphold you, with his sheep securely fold you: God be with you till we meet again. Congregational Commitment Hymn “I Was There” TFWS #2051 I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; In a blaze of light you wandered off to find where demons dwell. When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. If you find someone to share your time and you join your hearts as one, I'll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk 'till rising sun. In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I'll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I've begun. When the evening gently closes in, and you shut your weary eyes, I'll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise. I was there to hear your borning cry, I'll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold. Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there. And may that same Jesus, who is the source of our new life, bring us joy and peace as we gather in His name. Amen. Hymn “Gather Us In” TFWS #2236 Here in this place new light is streaming, now is the darkness vanished away, see in this space our fears and our dreamings, brought here to you in the light of this day. Gather us in ―the lost and forsaken, gather us in the blind and the lame; call to us now, and we shall awaken, we shall arise at the sound of our name. Here we will take the wine and the water, here we will take the bread of new birth, here you shall call your sons and your daughters, call us anew to be salt for the earth. Give us to drink the wine of compassion, Give us to eat the bread that is you; nourish us well, and tech us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true. Not in the dark of building confining, not in some heaven, light years away, but here in this place the new light is shining, now is the Kingdom, now is the day. Gather us in and hold us forever, gather us in and make us your own; gather us in all peoples together, fire of love in our flesh and our bone. Interlude “Dona Nobis Pacem” Arranged by Ellen Foncannon *Call to Worship The story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, tells us that after his celebrated arrival. He went into the Temple and looked around at everything. As we gather here for worship today may it be with a sense that Jesus has walked in too, and is looking around. Children’s Processional with Congregational Singing “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna” UMH #278 1 Hosanna, loud hosanna the little children sang; through pillared court and temple the lovely anthem rang. To Jesus, who had blessed them, close folded to his breast, the children sang their praises, the simplest and the best. 2 From Olivet they followed mid an exultant crowd, the victory palm branch waving, and chanting clear and loud. The Lord of earth and heaven rode on in lowly state, nor scorned that little children should on his bidding wait. 3 "Hosanna in the highest!" That ancient song we sing, for Christ is our Redeemer, the Lord of heaven, our King. O may we ever praise him with heart and life and voice, and in his blissful presence eternally rejoice. Those who are too young to make that decision are baptized with their parent’s commitment to provide a Christian education with the prayerful hope that their child will confirm this decision later in life. To the parents of RJ: Reece and Suzy, you have shared in God’s creative power, giving life to this wonderful young man. Will you pledge to support and love RJ by providing a loving home that includes the opportunity for RJ to grow up in a community of Christian faith, with the hope that he will someday confirm the decision that you are making for him this day? To the Congregation: Reece and Suzy, along with other members of their family, they have expressed their trust in God and in you, the Fruitland United Methodist Church, by presenting RJ for baptism. Will you pledge your support and loving presence in times of ease and difficulty, in times of joy and sorrow, in times of growth and frustration? Will you pledge to be faithful witnesses for Christ in praying for RJ, Suzy, and Reece? Pastor: RJ, I now baptize you in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In praise to God for RJ and remembering our own need for childlikeness before God, let us hear the commitment of this choir number. O sabbath rest by Galilee, O calm of hills above, where Jesus knelt to share with thee the silence of eternity, interpreted by love! Drop thy still dews of quietness, till all our strivings cease; take from our souls the strain and stress, and let our ordered lives confess the beauty of thy peace. Breathe through the heats of our desire thy coolness and thy balm; let sense be dumb, let flesh retire; speak through the earthquake, wind, and fire, O still, small voice of calm. Refrain Offering Prayer Old Testament Reading - Deuteronomy 26:1-11 Gospel Reading - Luke 4:1-13 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks Be To God Message “First Love” Revelation 2: 1-7 Sermon Notes: Toward the end of the First Century (AD) John the Apostle was imprisoned at the penal colony on Patmos, an island in the Aegean Sea between Greece and what is now Turkey. It was there that John wrote the Book of Revelation (the last book in the Bible). At the time of his imprisonment and the writing of this book, John was probably in his late 90s and the only living original apostles that Jesus chose. When called to follow Jesus he and his brother James were commercial fishermen who fished the Sea of Galilee. He is the Spirit-inspired author of the Gospel of John, the letters of First, Second, and Third John, and the Revelation of John. One Sunday morning John was “in the Spirt” (Revelation1:10) and experienced a visit from “the First and the Last,” (Revelation 1:17) and was commanded to write down what he was to see. John did just that. His first assignment was to write letters to seven churches that were in seven cities in the western part of Turkey. Today’s sermon takes it shape from the first of those letters. It was written to the church which was in the city of Ephesus. You can read how the Ephesian church came to exist by reading Acts 19. It’s quite a story! Paul wrote a letter to this congregation. It was to become an important and influence church in the early history of Christianity. Now, toward the end of the First Century (AD) the congregation receives another letter. This one came from Patmos claiming to be dictated to John (their beloved Bishop) by none other than Jesus, the Resurrected Messiah. Communion Hymn: “Eat This Bread” UMH#628 2x Eat this bread, Drink this cup Come to him and never be hungry. Eat this bread, Drink this cup, Trust in him and you will not thirst. Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us confess our sin before God and one another. Prayer of Confession and Pardon Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Forgive us, we pray. Our feet have strayed from the path of Christ and we have wandered from you. Forgive us, we pray. We have put our faith in the loud voices of this world, ignoring your whispers. Forgive us, we pray. We do want to follow Jesus, the Christ, in whose name we pray. Amen. Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Bread and Cup Please pray: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead. May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Commitment Hymn: "He Leadeth Me" UMH #128 vs 1, 3 He leadeth me: O blessed thought! O words with heavenly comfort fraught! Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine, nor ever murmur nor repine; content, whatever lot I see, since 'tis my God that leadeth me. Thanks be to God! Message Part 1 “Responding” The Chosen – Episode 8 Now he (Jesus) had to go through Samaria. So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. Jacob’s well was there and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.) The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) John 4:4-9 This passage highlights the ways Jesus breaks down barriers that separate and exclude people from the Kingdom of God. The hateful division between Jews and Samaritans was centuries old by the time Jesus comes on the scene. It dates back to the Eighth Century B.C. Take a look at verse 4. Read it out loud. Look at attached map. Did Jesus ‘have” to go through Samaria because there were no other roads? No. Why did he “have” to go through Samaria? Most importantly, in this passage Jesus reveals that he is indeed the Messiah (John 4:26). Hymn “O Master, Let Me Walk with Thee” UMH #430 O Master, let me walk with thee in lowly paths of service free; tell me thy secret; help me bear the strain of toil, the fret of care. Help me the slow of heart to move by some clear, winning word of love; teach me the wayward feet to stay, and guide them in the homeward way. Teach me thy patience; still with thee in closer, dearer company, in work that keeps faith sweet and strong, in trust that triumphs over wrong; In hope that sends a shining ray far down the future's broadening way, in peace that only thou canst give, with thee, O Master, let me live. Message Part 2 “Breaking Down Barriers” The Chosen – Episode 8 Hymn “I Surrender All” UMH #354 All to Jesus I surrender; all to him I freely give; I will ever love and trust him, in his presence daily live. Refrain: I surrender all, I surrender all, all to thee, my blessed Savior, I surrender all. [Refrain] All to Jesus I surrender; make me, Savior, wholly thine; let me feel the Holy Spirit, truly know that thou art mine. February 20, 2022 Communion Sunday Prelude Welcome and Announcements *Call to Worship Calling Song “He Has Made Me Glad” TFWS #2270 I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart, I will enter his courts with praise. I will say, “This is the day that the Lord has made.” I will rejoice, for he has made me glad. He has made me glad, he has made me glad. I will rejoice, for he has made me glad. He has made me glad, he has made me glad. I will rejoice, for he has made me glad Responsive Reading from Psalm 37 Leader: Do not fret because of those who are evil or be envious of those who do wrong; for like the grass they will soon wither, like green plants they will soon die away. People: Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture. Take delight in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. All: Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this. Unison Invocation Heavenly Father, we come in the name of Jesus, asking that as we gather this morning, your presence will touch us in some way. Use the songs, the scriptures, the sunlight, or anything you can find to lead us deeper into your kingdom. Amen. Hymn “We Have Come at Christ’s Own Bidding” TFWS #2103 We have come at Christ's own bidding to this high and holy place, where we wait with hope and longing for some token of God's grace. Here we pray for new assurance that our faith is not in vain, searching like those first disciples for a sign both clear and plain. Light breaks through our clouds and shadows, splendor bathes the flesh joined Word, Moses and Elijah marvel as the heavenly voice is heard. Eyes and hearts behold with wonder how the Law and Prophets meet: Christ with garments drenched in brightness, stands transfigured and complete. Strengthened by this glimpse of glory, fearful lest our faith decline, we, like Peter, find it tempting to remain and build a shrine. But true worship gives us courage to proclaim what we profess, that our daily lives may prove us people of god we bless. Old Testament Reading - Numbers 21:4-9 Gospel Reading - Matthew 9:9-13 Message “Invitations” John 3:1-21 - The Chosen – Season 1, Episode 7 This Sunday's sixteen minute clip (The Chosen – Episode 7) dramatically portrays two invitations. The first happens in a private meeting between Jesus and Nicodemus. The second is the very public calling of Matthew. Get your Bible and read about these two events. You will find the private meeting with Nicodemus in John 3:1-21. It will require about 3 minutes of your time to read it. Then you can read how Matthew describes Jesus calling him in Matthew 9:9-13. That takes about 45 seconds to read out loud. Ponder these questions:

List some things you know about the wedding in Cana. Then list some things you don’t know. Can you remember anything embarrassing happening at a wedding? Something embarrassing happen at the Cana wedding. They ran out of wine. We don’t know why that happened but it did. Do a little research about the jars, the ones Jesus asked to be filled. We remember that you have adopted all of us as your children and that Jesus said we must receive your kingdom as little children. Open our eyes to see the blessings children bring and teach us to love them as Jesus does. We pray in his name. Amen Hymn of Praise: “Tell Me the Stories of Jesus” UMH #277 all vs. Tell me the stories of Jesus I love to hear; things I would ask him to tell me if he were here: scenes by the wayside, tales of the sea, stories of Jesus, tell them to me. First let me hear how the children stood round his knee, and I shall fancy his blessing resting on me; words full of kindness, deeds full of grace, all in the lovelight of Jesus' face. Into the city I'd follow the children's band, waving a branch of the palm tree high in my hand; one of his heralds, yes, I would sing loudest hosannas, "Jesus is King!" Gospel Reading - Mark 10:13-16 New Testament Reading - 3 John 1-4 Message: “Jesus Loves the Little Children” The Chosen, Season 1, Episode 3 Those words make us want to break into song! “Red, brown, yellow, black, and white! They are precious in his sight. Jesus loves the little children of the world.” This Sunday our worship services highlights that powerful relationship Jesus engendered with children. Yes, there is a special place in Jesus’ heart for children. Perhaps this comes from the Hebrew Bible’s emphasis on teaching children the laws and stories of their faith. Deuteronomy 6:4-9 points out the importance of “talking” about the commandments. We know that Joseph and Mary took Jesus to Jerusalem every year (a sixty mile journey from Nazareth) for the Feast of the Passover. No doubt they often talked about the trip and the reasons for it. Look up Luke 2:41-52 for some information about one of those trips. In Mark 9:33-37 and Mark 10:13-15 Jesus offered the example of children as something his followers should emulate. And there in Mark 10:16, Jesus holds little ones in his arms and blesses them. While Nicodemus, Matthew, Simon, Andrew, and Zebedee are dealing with the “adult” things of life, Jesus is making some young friends. Let’s think about our influence on the lives of young people.

And praises sing to God the king, and peace to men on earth. Old Testament Reading - Jeremiah 33:14-16 Gospel Reading - Luke 21:29-36 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! November 7, 2021 – 11:00 A.M. Communion Sunday Prelude Welcome and Announcements Interlude Welcoming the Light of Christ and inviting the neighborhood to worship. *Call to Worship Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit Hymn “Open Our Eyes Lord” TFWS #2086 Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus, to reach out and touch him, and say that we love him. Open our ears, Lord, and help us to listen. Open our eyes, Lord, we want to see Jesus. The Apostles Creed I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy universal church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen Unison Invocation Gracious and holy God, We ask that this time might correct our thinking and influence our actions. We come to worship you and only you. We offer this prayer in the name of Jesus, the Christ. Amen. Hymn “Just a Closer Walk with Thee” TFWS #2158 I am weak, but thou art strong; Jesus, keep me from all wrong; I'll be satisfied as long as I walk, let me walk close to thee. Refrain: Just a closer walk with thee, grant it, Jesus, is my plea, daily walking close to thee: Let it be, dear Lord, let it be. Through this world of toil and snares, if I falter, Lord, who cares? Who with me my burden shares? None but Thee, dear Lord, none but thee. [Refrain] When my feeble life is o'er, time for me will be no more; guide me gently, safely o'er to thy shore, dear Lord, to thy shore. [Refrain] Old Testament Reading - 1 Kings 17: 8-16 Gospel Reading - Mark 12: 38-44 God’s Word for God’s People. Thanks be to God! The Lord’s Prayer Message “When What You’ve Got is Not a Lot” Mark 12: 38-44 by Rev. Gene Schandorff The Communion Service Communion Hymn “What a Friend We Have in Jesus” UMH #526 What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! O what peace we often forfeit, O what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer. Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to the Lord in prayer. Can we find a friend so faithful who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to the Lord in prayer. Are we weak and heavy laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge; take it to the Lord in prayer. Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In his arms he'll take and shield thee; thou wilt find a solace there. Our Lord invites to his table all who love him, who earnestly repent of their sin and seek to live in peace with one another. Let us confess our sin before God and one another. Unison Prayer of Confession and Pardon Merciful God, we confess that we have not loved you with our whole heart. Our faith has been tested and we have stumbled. Amen. Leader: Hear the good news; Christ died for us while we were yet sinners. That proves God’s love for us. In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. All: In the name of Jesus Christ, you are forgiven. Thanks be to God! Bread and Cup Guidance for the Communion Service will be provided. After we have received the bread and the cup, please join the congregation as we pray: Eternal God, we give you thanks for this holy mystery in which “the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” Strengthen us in mind, body and soul for the days ahead. May your Spirit fill us as we live and pray in Jesus’ name. Amen. Unison Benediction May the peace of the Lord Jesus go with you wherever he may send you. May he guide you through the wilderness, protect you through the storm. May he bring you home rejoicing at the wonders he has shown you. May he bring you home rejoicing once again into our doors.
