Hi Everyone! November 27, 2024
Happy Thanksgiving to you all! We had a little drama last Sunday. Danny Crego was filling in for our pastor who is on vacation in Arizona and he got a call five minutes before the service was to start. A little boy in his charge had run away from home! Danny and Annie left in a hurry and we went into motion. Glenora stepped up to lead the service and Macy led the songs. The service went on without a hitch because that’s what we do! After the service many people stayed to “hang the greens” and our church looks beautiful. We are ready for the Christmas season. Thanks to everyone who helped. You are appreciated! I’m happy to report that the little boy was found! It’s getting down to crunch time for the Winter Festival preparations. What can you do? Go through new or newish items that you no longer need and get them to church, invite your friends and family to attend the festival, eat dinner, bid on items and buy raffle tickets for the baskets, bake something yummy and get it to the church, come and enjoy the offerings and the fellowship. If you need help getting items to the church, give me a call and we’ll work it out. Our Christmas Eve Candlelight service will be at 6:00 p.m. this year. Please plan to attend and bring your friends and family with you. Let’s fill the sanctuary! If you know of anyone who isn’t cooking Thanksgiving but would like to enjoy traditional food, B&B’s Cruise In Café in downtown Payette will have a Friendsgiving Thanksgiving buffet on Thursday from 10-3. The price will be $10 for kids under 10 and $25 for anyone over 10. We have some prayer requests this week. Please pray for anyone who is facing the holidays without a loved one for the first time. Reach out to them and let them know you are praying for them and include them if you can. Marie Manser Dixon’s mom passed away last week. Please pray for Marie’s whole family. The Fruitland Church of Christ burned this week. The little house next to it caught on fire from a space heater and it spread to the church. I have reached out to them asking if they need our help and I know that Fruitland UMC has done the same. Keep them in your prayers please. If we put us in their place, we know how devastating it would be. Lyna Wilkins’ cousins Ken and Penny Beard are in need of prayer. Ken had a shoulder replacement and then got infection and had another surgery. Penny is taking care of him and is having some physical challenges of her own. Brandon Baumler starts his new job this week with Idaho Power! He will begin with training. He is thankful for this new job. He also thanks us for our prayers with the passing of his grandfather including Brandon and the boys’ travel to and from Minnesota. Leslie Olson asked us to pray for Brandon O’Brien. He had a successful liver transplant and the prayer is for the liver to thrive. Also keep his wife Alisa in your prayers. I’m reminding you to pray for Lillian, the mother-in-law of Gil who is one of our AA folks. She is in hospice care now and especially appreciates that we are praying for her. Kathryn Gordon asks us to pray for a friend of hers who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. We have some people traveling during this week. Teresa Beer, her son Austin, his wife Jalani and their two babies are driving to Seattle on Sunday to attend Jalani’s mom Tricia’s funeral. Please pray for safe travels and for Tricia’s family in this time of loss for them. Mike and Bonnie Hall drove to Eugene on Tuesday to spend Thanksgiving with their daughter Michelle (who was in my very first 1st grade class) and her family. Pray for a safe return trip. By all accounts James and Pastor Mary Beth are having a wonderful time in Arizona. I see lots of pictures of them in shirt sleeves enjoying the warm weather. James saved me from afar this week. I had a computer problem and contacted him. Even from Arizona and on his vacation, he walked me through it and encouraged me that yes, I could do it. And I did! I love that guy! Last Sunday, Pastor Mary Beth’s sermon was for Christ the King Sunday. She reminded us of this: Are we aligning ourselves with other kings or with Christ the King? We know what we should be doing. Amen. Enjoy Thanksgiving! Blessings, Cris

Upcoming Events The Ad Board will meet tomorrow, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend this meeting. We will decorate the church for the Christmas season next Sunday, Nov. 24th after church. Please plan to help if you can. Save the date! Our annual Winter Festival will be on Friday, December 6th! We will need everyone’s help. It’s time to prepare your shoebox for Operation Christmas Child. Ask Lyna for the details. Hi Everyone! November 13, 2024
This a pretty rare Wednesday newsletter since I won’t be in the office on Thursday. Remember, the church will be open all day because Lifeline Screening will be using our building. James Boesch will let them in and out which I appreciate very much. Shane Wright is selling raffle tickets for Special Olympics Idaho. They are raffling a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup. It looks pretty fancy to me! The tickets are $25 each. I know you understand what a fantastic organization Special Olympics is. Support them by buying a ticket from Shane if you can. And someone has to win it! It is time to prepare a box for Operation Christmas Child! Lyna Wilkins would be glad to help you with your box or purchase it on line. Just give her a call or see her in church. Our Ad Board will meet next Monday, November 18th at 7:00 p.m. Everyone is invited to this meeting. The Trustees will not meet this month. Here are a couple of feel-good stories for you. Gary and Leslie Olson’s granddaughter Sophia was in a softball tournament a couple of weeks ago and she hit FIVE homeruns! She is quite a pitcher as well and excels at volleyball. How fun is that? Good job Sophia! Our three seniors: Kathryn, Caleb and Lizzy were invited to march with Boise State Marching Band, the Blue Thunder last weekend. They joined with other excellent band members from other schools in the valley. From all accounts they had a wonderful experience. Caleb Smith has invited us to a concert at NNU on November 21st at 6pm. He mentioned that it will be the best concert he has been in so that’s saying a lot. The price for seniors is $4. Ask Caleb for more details when you see him at church. We have some prayer requests this week. Kathie Phelps’ sister Jackie has been diagnosed with breast cancer. Please pray for Jackie’s successful fight. Danny asked us to pray for a family he is working with. We don’t have details but we know that God knows! Please pray for safe travels for our pastor who is traveling to and from Chicago this week. She is attending a conference there. Keep Ron and I on your prayer list for safe travels to and from the Grand Canyon this week. Continue to pray for the Haren family, Peyton, Lis Williamson, Grace Hammon, the Taylor family, Peggy Roach, Lexi, Irene Jeffries, Kris Roberts, Don Keim’s family, Shannon Osborn, Carmen’s cousin Tory and Glenora’s brother Jim. Last Sunday, Pastor Mary Beth’s sermon was from the book of Ruth. Ruth had an unconventional life but kept fighting back. It’s a good thing she did because she was the (many) great grandmother of Jesus. It’s no wonder she has her own book in the Bible. The book of Ruth only has 4 chapters and our pastor encourages us to read it. Ruth is a great example to us all. I’m definitely Team Ruth! Have a great rest of the week and we hope to see you on Sunday! Blessings, Cris Payette United Methodist Church

As you might know I worked at the polls on Tuesday at the American Legion Building. I was honored to work with a fantastic team for a 14-hour day. Why do I do that? Because my mom did it and was proud of it. We had almost 1,200 voters come to our precinct and it was a very busy day. No matter our political views I think we can agree that Americans show up and that’s a good thing. The United Methodist Men will meet for breakfast this Saturday at 9:00 at Erika’s Kitchen in Payette. All men are invited. The Finance Committee will meet next Tuesday, November 12th at noon in the fellowship hall. Everyone is welcome to attend. Next Thursday, November 14th the church office will be closed. Ron and I are taking a quick trip to the Grand Canyon. We haven’t seen it yet and think it’s a “must see”. The church will be unlocked most of the day because Lifeline Screening will be using our building. James agreed to let them in. Glenora and her team are finalizing plans for the Winter Festival. Please let her know as soon as possible if you are willing to donate towards a basket or silent auction item. You can donate an actual item or money that Tami Wright will use to shop! We will need everyone’s help on Friday, December 6th. Please save the date and start inviting your friends! We have prayer requests this week. Anne DeBord’s brother Don Keim passed away this week. He was 97 and by all accounts led a wonderful life. Anne asks that we pray for her family. Kathie Phelps asked for us to pray for her sister Jackie. Glenora’s daughter Tina is in need of prayers for an eye injury. She scratched her cornea when something got into her eye. Please pray for complete healing. Kris Roberts who attended PUMC a few years ago and is good friends with our Bridge players had a fall and broke her hip. She had surgery on Wednesday. Pray for a quick recovery time for Kris. Karen Sagehorn asked us to pray for EJ Bear and his family. His mother passed away and EJ asked for prayers. Also pray for Freddie and Ira. Ira will be moving back home on hospice care. His wife Freddie especially needs our prayers. This Sunday is the first Sunday in Advent! I absolutely love this time of year. Please plan to attend church this week. Pastor Mary Beth will be leading our service with Danny’s help. We sure hope to see you here. Advent is a time of waiting for our Lord, who will visit us in all our hearts. The Lord is coming! Let us wait for Him. Blessings, Cris Hi Everyone! October 31, 2024
Happy Halloween to you! Tis the season to give candy and we are ready. I put all the candy on a cart and it is ready to go for Trunk or Treat. We hope to see a bunch of you come down to help us out. Please arrive by 4:30 to prepare for the onslaught of kids that are sure to come. If you didn’t get to the store to buy candy, we have enough to share. This weekend is the end of daylight savings time. Remember to set your clocks back one hour when you go to bed Saturday night. It will be light again in the mornings but whoa…. dark early in the evenings. I’d be a fan of just leaving the time be what it is but it has been happening since I was 10 years old. It probably won’t change anytime soon. Save a couple of dates on Sundays please. On Sunday, Nov. 10th the United Methodist Men will be serving a taco lunch right after church and the women’s group will be serving the ever-popular ice cream sundae bar again! It will all be delicious for sure. A basket for a free will offering will be available. The other Sunday to remember is November 24th. We will be “hanging the greens”. Please plan to stay and help us decorate. “Many hands make light work”- Edna Rice If you would like to donate a basket or silent auction item for the Winter Festival, please let me know or tell Glenora directly. We need to get these items nailed down so we can continue planning. Tickets for the baskets will go on sale in a couple of weeks. Jeanie Hershey called a few days ago just to catch up. She reports that the Hersheys are just fine. She prays for us and knows we pray for her family. Keep it up! Thanks everyone for your generous tips for Mahlon, our lawn guy. We collected $200 for Mahlon and his family. This is a great time to have a little extra money for a guy with a wife and three kids. They will be thankful. I received word that our own Caleb Smith was accepted to Boise State University to start in the fall. I don’t know for sure but I just bet he’ll be in the band. Congrats to Caleb! We have quite a few prayer requests this week. Dennis Haren’s son Kurtis, age 33 passed away last week in Old Town, Idaho which is in Bonner County. A celebration of Kurt’s life will be held later. Please pray for his whole family. Glenora Wright’s brother Jim was recently hospitalized with blood clots. He is back home but is still needing our prayers. He lives in Nevada. Brandon Baumler and his sons are traveling to the Midwest for his grandfather’s funeral. Please pray for save travels for the Baumler guys. Brandon’s kids’ great grandmother is struggling to breathe and has COPD. Keep her in your prayers. Dalyce Knight’s friend Carol Haney’s son Kenny passed away this week. Please keep Carol and her family in your prayers. I received word this week that Shannon Osborn had surgery recently and it has been a trying recovery. Please keep Shannon and her mom Sue in your prayers. Ron Warzyn asked for prayers for his brother Jerry who has adult-onset Muscular Dystrophy. Walking is very hard for him as well as swallowing. Keep Jerry in your prayers. Laura Tompkins reports that her mom Kathryn Gordon is doing very well after surgery. Amen to that. Pray that she continues to heal completely. A few weeks ago, I asked for you to pray for Landon Warner, a former student of mine who at 18 was found to have a large tumor in his abdomen. At first his doctors in California thought he was a candidate for surgery but now feel that at this time it would be best to leave it alone. The tumor is slow growing and is benign. He now has a doctor in Boise who will monitor his health. This is an answer to prayer to Landon and his family. Thanks for your prayers. We had a very touching All Saints Day service on Sunday. I definitely teared up a few times when the names of our saints were read. Our pastor prepared a very heartfelt service. This is something that Pastor Mary Beth told us on Sunday. “Christian hope is… God with us. Christ is with us in suffering and cries with us when we cry”. I know He rejoices with us when we are happy. How blessed are we to have Him. Blessings, Cris PS Next Tuesday is Election Day and I will be working the polls at the American Legion Building so I will not be in the office. Precinct #1 is here at PUMC so the building will be open all day. Payette United Methodist Church
